The “boho” style is one of the most recognizable in fashion today.

The look took off in the late 1960s and ‘70s. Celebrities like Zoë Kravitz, Florence Welch, Chaka Khan and even the Olsen twins have been known to challenge fashion conventions and wear the hippie-chic look that includes long skirts and dresses, tunics and wood jewelry or fringed handbags.

If you happen to love this free-spirited style, a new store in Cary’s Fenton development might be for you.

Johnny Was, a Los Angeles-based clothing store, offers chic bohemian-inspired, or boho, clothing and accessories, signature prints, and vintage style. This is its second location in the state, after Charlotte, and the first in the Triangle. Johnny Was has over 40 stores across the country.

The store adds to the growing number of popular brands and retail shops like Madewell, Faherty, Warby Parker, Nike and lululemon at the mixed-use development.

About the store: Johnny Was was founded in 1987 by entrepreneur and designer Eli Levite.

The affordable luxury brand offers “bohemian-inspired” clothing made with colorful prints that combine “style, comfort, and sophistication.”

Some clothing items include evening-wear gowns, shoes, silk sets, kimonos and bathing suits.

The store also sells handcrafted Italian leather handbags, fragrances and outdoor and home items.

The Fenton location is open Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m.

Retail and dining at Fenton: Since opening last summer, Fenton has become home to over 20 retail stores and 14 restaurants and bars.

The 92-acre mixed-use district is located at Cary Towne Boulevard and Trinity Road in Cary, is also home to the town’s second Paragon Theaters location.

Fenton’s luxury apartments, The Allison at Fenton, opened this year with studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom units starting at $1,500 per month.
