Gigi Hadid Revives Working Girl Style With This Classic Sneaker

In Mike Nichols’s classic 1988 rom-com, Working Girl, Tess McGill—played by Melanie Griffith—attempts to work her way up the corporate totem pole in a series of power suits and chunky white sneakers. More than three decades later, that aesthetic, which merged business sensibility with street-smart athleticism, appears to still be going strong. Case and point: model Gigi Hadid, who stepped out in New York City last night wearing a modern interpretation of the film’s signature wardrobe.

Opting for a pair of classic white Reebok sneakers that retail for $75, Hadid took a cue from Giffith’s character and styled them with above-the-ankle socks. For a cooler spin on the structured white blazer, she wore a graphic tee that could easily lend itself to an office for creative types. Black bike shorts by Aritzia—another affordable piece, retailing for $38—gave the ensemble a cool-girl finish, as did her round white sunglasses, colorful Rogue Matilda tote bag, and Jacquie Aiche pendant necklace. Wherever she was headed—board meeting or meet-up with friends—her pointed styling twists worked.
