Gilbert takes the lead after day one of 3A boys state golf meet

The Gilbert boys golf team is off to a great start in its attempt to repeat as Class 3A state champions.

The Tiger boys took a commanding 12-stroke lead after the first 18 holes of competition Monday at the Veenker Memorial Golf Course in Ames.

Gilbert's Sawyer Hansen is tied for third place individually with a three-over-par score of 75 over the first 18 holes of the Class 3A boys state golf meet Monday at the Veenker Memorial Golf Course in Ames. Gilbert leads the team standings after the first day by 12 strokes with a score of 314.

Gilbert shot a 26-over-par score of 314 as a team Monday. That gives the Tigers a 12-stroke lead over Solon heading into the final day of competition.

"It was a good day for the team," Gilbert head coach Holly Lester said. "A 12-stroke advantage is a comfortable margin."

But even with the lead, Lester wasn't about to crown her team state champions just yet.

"(Tuesday) could be a challenge with the predicted weather — rain coming in about the time we will tee-off," Lester said. "Any team could play well in the rain as this has been our golf season weather."

Sawyer Hansen has played some of his best golf to step up as the leader for Gilbert after the first day. Hansen shot a three-over score of 75 Monday to finish in a tie with Solon's Frank Haege for third place behind Waverly-Shell Rock's Hogan Hansen, who leads with a three-under 69, and Knoxville's Evan Smith, who shot a 74.

"Sawyer Hansen had a great round," Lester said. "His best this season."

Spencer Clatt is in sixth place for the Tigers with a 77. Joey Currans is tied for ninth with an 80 and Brock Snyder shot an 82 to tie for 15th.

Ryan Lynch finished with a 94 and Hudson White carded a 102 as the other Gilbert golfers competing at state.
