Gilded toilet: A Russian police corruption probe

Palatial, and garish.

Believe it or not, this gilded abode is a Russian police colonel's mansion.

Russian authorities said on Tuesday it had caught a criminal gang led by the officer, who worked in traffic enforcement. He's said to have extorted huge bribes worth over a quarter of a million dollars.

The Investigative Committee said a traffic police colonel in the southern region of Stavropol had been arrested along with six other people on suspicion of taking large bribes. A senior lawmaker said more than 35 traffic police officers had also been detained.

Investigators say the group had issued permits for years to grain cargo transporters in the region in exchange for payments allowing permit holders to ignore regional laws even when crossing traffic police checkpoints.
