Gilroy Firing Stirs Discrimination Concerns: Report
GILROY, CA — A Gilroy postal worker’s firing has stirred concerns that a women’s sexual orientation played a role in her dismissal, KTVU reports.
Ria Silva, who goes by the name “Jaz,” was fired from her job at the U.S. Post Office in Gilroy about a month after she started her new job, the report said.
Silva said her father-in-law died from COVID-19, and was called into her supervisor’s office and asked to explain that Gary Young was her wife’s father according to the report.
Silva said she was sent home that day, the report said.
She was evaluated for symptoms and even though she didn’t show any was fired a week later according to the report.
Silva said she had no issues at her job and was never issued a warning or write-up.
She told KTVU she believes her sexual orientation played a role in her firing.
