Gimmie Him: Justin Herbert would be perfect building block for future

As the New England Patriots get set to take on the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, it’s time for this week’s edition of “Gimmie Him,” where we imagine Bill Belichick stealing one of the upcoming opponent’s best players. Given the Patriots’ need for consistent production at the position, as well as the fact he is only a rookie, Justin Herbert would be the perfect piece with the Patriots offense, not only right now, but moving forward as well.

When you take a look at his statistics, it’s hard to believe that this is his first year in the National Football League. He has 3,015 passing yards, three touchdowns, and seven interceptions. He is on pace to break the NFL rookie record of 27 touchdown passes as well as the rookie record for passing yards in a season, which is 4,374.

As much as I admire the job that Cam Newton is doing under center for the New England Patriots, it would not be a stretch to pick Herbert as a player that would fit well for New England. He would set them up at the quarterback position not only right now, but for the future as well.

Herbert is an extremely accurate passer, as evidenced by his performance against the Jets. In that game, he completed 75.5% of his passes for 366 yards and three touchdowns.

He has the ability to run with the ball as well as throw an accurate deep ball. He is the perfect quarterback for the modern game, in the sense that he is as good a pocket passer as he is on the run. He’s not as good as Patrick Mahomes per se, but he does possess a strong level of accuracy and arm strength.

When you take a look at the statistics Cam Newton has compiled, they are not great to say the least. He has thrown for 1,984 yards, four touchdowns, and nine interceptions. Whether it be solely the skill of Newton or the lack of a big-play threat at wide receiver, those numbers leave a lot to be desired.

Herbert would be able to provide the same skill set of Newton in terms of mobility . The accuracy, strong arm, and younger age are what sets the two apart. Herbert would be able to provide consistency and stability at a position where the Patriots do not really have either of those things right now. That alone is enough to want Herbert on this roster.
