Girl, 12, accused of attacking girl, 11, with acid on Detroit playground

A playground scuffle in Detroit ended with acid burns and felony charges.

The incident, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office said Saturday, unfolded last week, between two girls, a 12-year-old and an 11-year-old. The older girl, who was not named, is accused of attacking the younger one with a caustic chemical, and is now facing two assault felonies.

"This is an extremely troubling set of allegations," Worthy said in a news release, calling the July 9 actions of the girl who is charged a "horrible decision" for which there is "no excuse."

In the 12-year-old suspect's preliminary hearing, the prosecutor said her bond was set at $10,000 and ordered to have no contact with the younger girl — or any witnesses. She also is ordered to return to court at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The prosecutor did not say where the playground is or explain where the acid came from. But TV news stations interviewed 11-year-old victim, Deaira Summers, about what happened and showed viewers her injuries, second- and third-degree burns acid burns.

"I hope she gets everything she deserves," Deaira told WJBK-TV (Fox 2), while wrapped with white gauze. WJBK said the incident happened on the Vernor Elementary-Middle School playground and is under investigation by the Detroit Public Schools Community District. "I just saw a shadow, and I was, like, I know when someone's coming up behind me."

Deaira said she looked back and someone was "right there."

Seconds later, she added, whatever was on her started burning her skin.

Neither child attended that elementary school, WJBK reported Verner Elementary said.

The acid, which WDIV-TV (Channel 4) reported ate through Deaira's shirt and apparently came from a parent.

WDIV said after Deaira was doused with the acid, she started to run home, but first doubled back to the playground to fetch her purse. When finally she got home, the news station reported, she showered off whatever chemical was thrown at her and went to the hospital, where she was treated for a few days.
