Girl, 16, hit by car in Warwick Wednesday morning

A 16-year-old girl was struck by a small SUV and injured while crossing the road Wednesday morning, apparently on her way to a bus stop for school, the Warwick police said.

It happened at about 6:42 a.m. on Buttonwoods Avenue, Capt. Robert Hart said.

The girl was initially reported to be unconscious with a head injury; she was taken to Hasbro Children's Hospital, where she was conscious, Hart said via email shortly after 10 a.m.

The police believe the girl was crossing the road to get to her bus stop at a shopping plaza parking lot when she was hit by the vehicle, which had been traveling south, Hart said.

The incident is still under investigation, and the police had not issued any citations Wednesday morning, he said. Neither excessive speed nor alcohol were factors, he said. The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation, Hart said.
