Girl dies after four-year-old brother accidentally shoots her in the head

A six-year-old girl died after being accidentally shot in the head by her four-year-old brother, US police have said.

Millie Drew Kelly was fatally injured while sitting in her family's car outside their home in Paulding County, Georgia.

Their mother was preparing to set off but had got out of the vehicle when it failed to start. She then heard a shot from inside the car.

“Detectives determined that the four-year-old male sibling retrieved a handgun from the console of the vehicle and accidently discharged it, striking his six-year-old sister in the head,” the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

Police received an emergency call to the scene in Laurelcrest Lane at around 5.45pm on Monday, 8 April.

Millie was taken to hospital in Atlanta but succumbed to her injuries two days later.

Detectives have decided not to file any charges in the case.

Paulding County sheriff Gary Gulledge said: “Our hearts break for this family and we hope God puts his healing hands around them during this difficult time.

“We want to remind everyone to keep their firearms unloaded and secured in an area away from children to ensure that this never happens again.”

A crowdfunding campaign set up to help the family has raised nearly $35,000 (£27,000.)
