Big Daddy Dupree blues band headlines Music in the Gardens

SOUTH BEND — The History Museum and WVPE-FM (88.1) present Music in the Gardens from 5 to 9 p.m. July 29 in the museum’s Historic Oliver Gardens at 808 W. Washington St.

The event features Big Daddy Dupree’s Broke & Hungry Blues Band, an eight-piece, soul-infused, low-down-and-dirty blues band from Leesburg, Ind.

The Landing will have food and drink for purchase.

Girl Named Tom performs July 28 at Elkhart Country 4-H Fair

GOSHEN — Girl Named Tom performs at 7:30 p.m. July 28 at the Elkhart County 4-H Fair at 17746-D County Road 34.

Previously based in South Bend, Girl Named Tom — siblings Bekah, Joshua and Caleb Liechty — won the fall 2021 round of NBC’s “The Voice,” the first group act to do so.

Admission to Girl Named Tom is free with paid admission to the fair.

The fair continues through July 30 with daily hours of 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

With a theme of “Fun at Every Turn,” other remaining highlights include the following:

• Truck & Tractor Pulls at 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. July 28; $10

• A rodeo at 1 and 8 p.m. July 29; $10

• A Classic Car Cruise In from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 30: View a wide array of vintage vehicles. Admission for the driver is free, but all passengers are required to purchase an admission ticket for entry.

• The 19th annual Corvette Show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 30

• A demolition derby at 7 p.m. July 30; $10

Midway hours are 1 to 11 p.m. July 28, 3 to 11 p.m. July 29 and noon to 11 p.m. July 30. Ride tickets are $1.50 each, $25 for a 20-ticket sheet and $60 for a 50-ticket sheet.

Youth Agricultural Area open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Fair admission is $10; free for ages 9 and younger.

Elkhart ArtWalk goes ‘Around the World’ for July event

ELKHART — “Around the World” is the theme for this month’s Elkhart ArtWalk,  from 5 to 8 p.m. July 28 in downtown.

Elkhart ArtWalk takes place from 5 to 8 p.m. the last Thursday of each month from April to October with local artists and vendors stationed at Civic Plaza.

Lalo Cura headlines the Lerner on The Lawn series at 6 p.m. on The Central Park Green. A Latin-soul fusion band, Lalo Cura has developed a unique sound that stems from its powerful rhythm section, Santana-inspired guitar solos, culturally progressive lyrics, and synchronized guitar and horn lines. Bring a lawn chair or blanket for seating.

Other highlights include dancers from the Tutu School’s  company, the Aurinko Ballet, performing dances from around the world, including from Spain, Turkey, India, Africa, China and elsewhere, from 5 to 6 p.m. at Civic Plaza; free admission to the Midwest Museum of American Art; a “Well-Crafted Market” with artisans and performers; the Elkhart Education Foundation’s children’s activity table, which includes The Art Depot’s free monthly craft; information booths; and a display of children’s artwork at the Elkhart Public Library Downtown, 300 S. 2nd St. — parents should submit the artwork from 3 to 5 p.m. so that it can be matted and displayed.

Dave Hause performs July 29 at Ignition Music Garage in Goshen

GOSHEN — Singer-songwriter Dave Hause performs at 7:30 p.m. July 29 at Ignition Music Garage 120 E. Washington St.

The Philadelphia-based musician is on tour in support of his fifth solo album, “Blood Harmony,” whose title references his songwriting partnership with his younger brother Tim and the album’s themes that relate to Hause’s roles as a musician, a brother, a husband, a son and a father.

Will Hoge produced “Blood Harmony,” released in October 2021, with a studio band that included Brandi Carlile’s drummer, Chris Powell; Bruce Springsteen and the E Street band bassist Garry Tallent; session guitarist Tom Bukovac; Jason Isbell’s guitarist, Sadler Vaden; and keyboardists Billy Justineau, Mike Webb and Jen Gunderman, who have played with Eric Church, Sheryl Crow and more.

Hause also is the frontman for the punk band The Loved Ones.

His other solo albums include 2011’s “Resolutions,” 2013’s “Devour,” 2017’s “Bury Me in Philly” and 2019’s “Kick.”

Community Foundation’s Performing Arts Series opens at South Bend’s Potawatomi Park

SOUTH BEND — The Community Foundation of St. Joseph County’s 2022 Performing Arts Series begins this weekend with a performance of “All’s Well That Ends Well” by the Notre Dame Shakespeare Festival’s Touring Company at 7 p.m.  July 30 at the Chris Wilson Pavilion in Potawatomi Park, 500 S. Greenlawn Ave.

The series continues at 7 p.m. Saturdays through Aug. 27:

• Aug. 6: Southold Dance Theater showcases its best students along with two professional guest artists, featuring classical ballet as well as modern dance.

• Aug. 13: “Lifting Our Voices: A Celebration of African American Music and Dance” includes a community choir performing spiritual and gospel selections, led by Marvin Curtis and Turrell O’Neal, a quintet from the South Bend Symphony Orchestra performing works by African American composers, and the UZIMA dance troupe. WUBS-FM 89.7 will offer a simulcast of the performance.

• Aug. 20: The South Bend Symphony Orchestra performs a full concert featuring music of love and passion, with a special preview of its October production of “West Side Story” with South Bend Civic Theatre. In addition, five graduating senior members of the South Bend Youth Symphony Orchestras will perform alongside the professional musicians on two pieces. WVPE-FM 88.1 will offer a simulcast of the performance, including a special Q&A with Music Director Alastair Willis and SBCT Executive Director Aaron Nichols.

• Aug. 27: Art 4 presents an evening of summer-inspired musical theater favorites, plus a preview of its upcoming production of Little Shop of Horrors.

Bring a lawn chair or blanket for seating. In case of rain, updates will be posted on the Community Foundation’s Facebook page and at cfsjc.org.
