It's Girl Scout Cookie time. What's new this year and how to get them in Peoria

The 2024 Girl Scout Cookie season is underway. Connoisseurs of Caramel deLites can once again get their yearly fix, but Raspberry Rally fans may be disappointed. In central Illinois, sales began Feb. 2 and continue through March 17.

Girl Scouts of the USA, billed as the largest girl-led organization in the world, said in a news release this year's theme is "Unbox the Future," aimed at removing social barriers that can keep girls boxed in. GSUSA said nearly 700,000 girls participate in the Girl Scout Cookie program, which "provides vital girl-led entrepreneurial skills that build courage, confidence, and character. As a result, girls obtain limitless barrier-breaking futures outside the box with transferable life skills." Girl Scout councils rely on cookie earnings to run their programming, which includes service projects, troop travel, and summer camp.

When can I get Girl Scout Cookies in 2024?

Cookies can be bought from a registered Girl Scout or through a local council's cookie booth. Beginning Feb. 16, customers can purchase cookies to be shipped directly to their homes via the Girl Scout Cookie Finder.

What is the No. 1 selling Girl Scout Cookie?

The most popular cookie in the Peoria area — and nationally — is the Thin Mint, said Emma Miller, director of product sales at Girl Scouts of Central Illinois. Her personal favorite is the Toast-Yay! — a French-toast inspired cookie. She said the cinnamon flavor and the icing "make it a really craveable cookie."

What about the Raspberry Rally?

One popular Girl Scout cookie that debuted last year isn't being offered in 2024, apparently a victim of its own success. Raspberry Rally, a raspberry-flavored cookie dipped in a chocolaty coating, was available exclusively online. The cookies were an instant success, wrote USA TODAY, selling out in a matter of hours and then being sold on eBay at about four times the price. That deprived Girl Scout troops of proceeds, and the integrity of cookies bought from sites like eBay could not be guaranteed, the story said. Miller said the cookie was also very popular in central Illinois. The Raspberry Rally joins previously discontinued varieties including Golden Yangles cheese crackers and Thank You Berry Munch, according to Wikipedia.
