Girl Scouts hitting the trail, and the red carpet

“Note: Must be brave around water and heights. Must be ... comfortable camping in tents outside and walking long distances.”

Doesn’t sound like an invitation for the weak or faint of heart. And at first glance, you may think this is an invitation for young men. But “young” would be the only accurate word.

That opening sentence was part of the invitation for Girl Scouts in fifth grade and older to take a week-long trip to Oklahoma, including kayaking, rafting rapids and seeing waterfalls. Plus, zip lining. Camping out, songs around the campfire and a visit to the Cowboy Museum also are on the agenda.

And you thought the boys had all the fun!

This is just one Girl Scout activity starting up. Girl Scouts of Central Texas members who have registered will soon start their “Sow What” journey, where they will explore where their food comes from – not just locally, but from great distances, even international. Most important, they will learn how their choices impact our world.

This month-long virtual journey is designed for girls entering freshman or sophomore high school years. They will receive assignments to do on their own, as well as join in on Zoom discussions.

Those who enjoy dressing up in all their finest dresses should enjoy the red carpet treatment at the “Me and He Red Carpet Premiere” in San Angelo June 18.

The Girl Scout and her “he” (dad, granddad, uncle, etc.) will view movie trailers made by fellow Girl Scouts, then can choose a full-length movie to watch. Promotion material warns: “Come prepared for the paparazzi!”

Registration deadline is almost here (June 2). Cost is $8 per girl and $5 per adult; invitation is only for Scouts registered in Central Texas Council. The restriction does not apply to their adult escort. Register at customercare@gsctx.org or contact kaylar@gsctx.org.

There are two sessions: 1:30-4:30 p.m. for Scouts in kindergarten through fifth grades, 5-8 p.m. for sixth grade or older. Location is the San Angelo Performing Arts Center.

That’s a wide range of events. Registration for the first two is over, but similar opportunities are open to Girl Scouts each year. If you are not a member now, contact your local council for information.

World Traveler Camp

As of early last week, The Grace Museum still had space in their World Traveler Camp June 20-24 for children entering first through sixth grades. Cost is $125 ($100 for Grace members). Other camps are full, but there is a waitlist.

Check at thegracemuseum.org under “Events and classes.”
