Girls basketball: 3 Volusia-Flagler-St. Johns players, 3 coaches win FACA awards

The accolades keep coming for Volusia-Flagler-St. Johns girls basketball programs. Three local players and three head coaches won Florida Athletic Coaches Association awards.

In District 9, which covers Volusia and Seminole counties, Mainland’s Anovia Sheals and New Smyrna Beach’s Corrin Austell grabbed Player of the Year honors at the 5A and 6A levels.

Father Lopez’s Gordon White (3A), Mainland’s Brandon Stewart (5A) and New Smyrna Beach’s Geri Fuhr (6A) claimed Coach of the Year in their respective classes.

In District 6, which includes Flagler and St. Johns counties, Nease’s Cami Robinson was named 6A Co-Player of the Year with Oakleaf’s Kayla Turner.

Sheals, a junior forward, averaged 19.7 points and 9.1 rebounds per game, helping the Bucs to their first state championship in her first year at the school. They finished with a 21-8 record.

After winning last season’s district player of the year, Austell was even better as a sophomore. The guard tallied 19.3 points per game with 5.1 assists and 4.0 rebounds — all improvements from 2021-22. The Barracudas went 16-6 under Fuhr’s guidance.

The Green Wave put up a 12-11 record under White.

Robinson, a senior guard, led the Panthers to a regional playoffs berth. She scored 19.4 points a game.
