GIRLS' BASKETBALL: 4 local players named All-State

Apr. 24—Four Schuylkill League girls' basketball players were honored Monday by being named to the 2023 Pennsylvania Sports Writers All-State Girls' Basketball Team.

North Schuylkill senior Maddy Wetzel was named to the Class 4A second team, while Panther Valley junior Maddison Maynard was a second-team selection in Class AA and Lourdes juniors Paityn Moyer and Masie Reed were selected to the Class A third team.

The All-State team is chosen through nominations and voting done by sports writers from across Pennsylvania, including the Republican Herald.

Wetzel, a 5-foot-8 guard, was the Republican Herald All-Area Co-Player of the Year after averaging 20.3 points per game and helping the Spartans go 23-4 and win the Schuylkill League championship for the third time in four years. The Spartans reached the District 11 Class 4A title game before falling 54-44 to Allentown Central Catholic. North Schuylkill was eliminated in the first round of the PIAA Class 4A playoffs with a 66-63 loss to Neumann-Goretti.

Wetzel finished with 1,314 career points and 77 3-pointers. Over her four-year career, in addition to the three Schuylkill League titles, Wetzel guided North Schuylkill to the 2020 District 11 Class 3A crown and three PIAA state playoff appearances.

Maynard, a 5-10 sharpshooter, averaged 22.6 points this season for the Panthers, who finished 12-11 and reached the District 11 Class AA playoffs. Maynard drained 32 3-pointers and scored 30 or more points five times, including 37 in Panther Valley's 85-84, overtime loss to Northern Lehigh in the district quarterfinals.

Moyer and Reed were the leaders in Lourdes' run to the PIAA Class A state championship game.

Moyer, a 5-9 forward, averaged just 7.6 points per game but had a great playoff run, including sinking the game-winning bucket in Lourdes' 34-33 win over District 2 champion Mountain View in the state semifinals.

Reed, a 5-8 point guard, scored 11.8 points per game and directed a Red Raiders' offense that rebounded from a District 4 semifinal loss to St. John Neumann to win five straight games, beating North Penn-Liberty, District 11 champion Nativity, District 5 champion Shade, St. John Neumman and Mountain View before falling 46-29 to Union Area in the state final at the Giant Center in Hershey.
