Girls Basketball: Bedford wins finale to secure share of SEC Red title

YPSILANTI − Bedford's girls basketball team took care of business.

The Mules finished off their regular season with a dominant 57-27 victory over Ypsilanti Lincoln and guaranteed themselves a share of the Southeastern Conference Red championship.

The league title is Bedford's first since 2009.

Victoria Gray and Nyah Mullins pushed Bedford to an early 19-3 lead in the first quarter, combining for 15 of the team's points in the opening period.

The Mules never trailed, leading 36-19 at halftime and winning the second half 21-18.

Peyton Behnke led all scorers with 15 points. Gray (14), Payton Pudlowski (13), and Mullins (10) also hit double figures.

Bedford shares this season's conference crown with Saline. Both teams finished 13-1 in the SEC Red. The only loss for both teams was to each other with both sides defending their home court.

Bedford finished the regular season 21-1 overall and set a school record for regular season wins. The schedule expanded this season from 20 games to 22.

ANN ARBOR − A hot start and strong defense helped Erie Mason pick up its seventh win in the penultimate game of the regular season Tuesday.

The Eagles hit four 3-pointers in the first quarter to open up an early 18-3 lead.

"We did a great job of moving the ball offensively and taking the open shot," Mason coach Josh Sweigert said. "Our defensive pressure helped create some good shots on the offensive end of the court. We played a great game today."

Audrey Trainor led Mason with 15 points and 6 steals, Bailey Meiring scored 13 points, and Kaylie Bash added 8 points and 4 assists.

Mason has won four of its past six games.

Jefferson has been fighting from behind in a lot of games this season.

The Bears flipped the script Tuesday by bolting out to a 12-2 lead in the first quarter. They were up by 8 at halftime then pushed their advantage to 37-24 after three periods.

Jefferson used a balanced attack to snap a 14-game losing streak and improve to 5-15. Anna Boggs led with 12 points, Claire Boggs scored 10, and Ellie Hintz and Grace Jones added 9 each.

GROSSE ILE – St. Mary Catholic Central held Grosse Ile to just 1 point in the second quarter and trailed 13-12 at halftime, but the Red Devils pulled away after the intermission.

“We had a number of open looks, but the ball just would not go in,” SMCC coach John Durbin said. “That was the difference.”

Caroline Roecker scored 14 points to lead the Kestrels, who had a five-game winning streak snapped and dipped to 16-5.

SMCC took the junior varsity game 43-24 as Brooklyn Carter scored 11 points.

ALLEN PARK − Summerfield's offense came crashing down after the first quarter as Allen Park Cabrini rallied to deal the Bulldogs just their third loss of the season.

Cabrini (11-9) outscored Summerfield 20-5 in the second quarter to take control.

"Had our worst shooting game of the season and no energy," Summerfield coach Mickey Moody said. "Had a 12-point lead in the first then we completely disappeared.

Ava Fisher paced Summerfield (18-3) with 8 points.

GIBRALTAR – Gibraltar Carlson fought back from a 32-21 halftime deficit to pull within 2 points after three quarters, before running out of gas in the final period.

Jalyn Bongiorno fueled the comeback with 7 of her 11 points in the third. She tied her career high.

Abby Carafelli led the 9-12 Marauders with 18 points and Brooklyn Kemokai added 13. Kemokai set a new career high and Carafelli equaled her season best.

The Tigers led 21-14 at halftime and 37-29 after three quarters.

"The girls played well tonight," Dundee coach Josh Salley said. "We did a lot of good things, but we couldn’t get a shot to fall when we needed. The girls are improving every game and I’m proud of their hard work."

OTTAWA LAKE − Whiteford's three-game winning streak came to an end Tuesday against Lenawee Christian.

The Cougars went up 14-3 after the first quarter to secure a lead throughout the game.

Annabelle Gapp and Madelyn Thomas scored 8 point apiece to lead Whiteford, which fell to 8-11 overall.
