Girls Basketball: Knappa free throws sink Vernonia

Jan. 25—Knappa did not panic during an eight-point deficit in the second quarter, as the Lady Loggers rallied and held a 10-point by the end of the third period in a 44-31 Northwest League girls basketball win Tuesday over visiting Vernonia.

Knappa had a big advantage at the free throw line. Making just one field goal in the second quarter, the home Loggers rallied with free throws, finishing 16-of-25 at the line, to Vernonia's 3-for-10.

But it was a 3-point barrage by freshman Mylie Lempea that ultimately sank Vernonia, as the freshman guard hit three long-range bombs in the third quarter, turning Knappa's 15-7 deficit into a 33-21 lead early in the fourth.

Lempea scored 10 points in the second half for a game-high 16, while teammate Arianna Miller finished with 11 points, nine at the free throw line. Alondra Piña added eight points, all in the second half.
