ADRIAN – Adrian Madison kept coming.

Erie Mason weathered the storm

The Eagles improved to 6-3 overall and a perfect 3-0 in the Tri-County Conference after holding of an upset-minded Madison squad 45-44 Friday night.

Mason cruised through the first half, holding Madison (2-6, 1-3 TCC) to 19 points and taking a 30-19 lead into halftime. The Trojans came out strong in the third quarter, cutting Mason's lead to 5 heading into the final period.

The comeback put Mason on its heels in the fourth and Madison went ahead by 2 points with 3 minutes remaining.

Monica DeGasto helped the Eagles regain the lead with 2 minutes to go and Mason held on for the victory.

"We showed great composure in the fourth quarter," Mason coach Josh Sweigert said. "Madison shot well from the field in the second half. We were able to overcome that and secure the victory. I was proud of the fact that we did not panic when they took the lead. We came right back and were able to take the lead for good."

Lizzy Liedel led Mason with 21 points and 10 rebounds, DeGasto added 13 points and Kaylie Bash scored 9 and played strong defense.

New Boston Huron 49, Flat Rock 48

NEW BOSTON – Flat Rock erased a 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter to come within a last-second shot of completing the rally, but New Boston Huron held on for victory.

The Rams missed an uncontested 3-pointer in the closing seconds that would have tied the game and forced overtime. Flat Rock grabbed the rebound and converted on the put-back as time expired.

Huron scored 22 points in the first quarter and carried a 28-14 lead into halftime. That lead persisted throughout the third quarter.

"Huron's initial pressure caused us some trouble, and we just couldn't get into any kind of flow offensively," Flat Rock coach Brian Kryk said. "We talked about not giving up at halftime and set a goal to cut our 14-point deficit in half. Unfortunately, we started the fourth quarter and were still down 14. I could tell that my girls still had a lot of fight in them."

Izzy Pritt scored 10 of her game-high 21 points in the opening quarter to stake a strong lead for Huron (4-2 overall, 3-1 Huron League). Samantha Belair added 8 points.

Sophia Somerset scored 14 points to lead Flat Rock, Matajia Cerroni had 13 points and 13 rebounds, Marissa Geresy scored 10 points, and Abby Goldobin contributed 6 points and 7 rebounds.

The Rams fell to 1-6 overall and 0-2 in the league.

"(Huron coach) Lindsey (Backhaus) definitely had her girls ready to play tonight and we just didn't match that in the first half," Kryk said.
