The Holland girls basketball team earned a season-opening win.

The Holland girls basketball team started the season with an opening win over the Trojans of Fruitport 53-22.

The Dutch started the game a little slow but once the second quarter began and the nerves were gone Holland pulled away.

"We were so ready to play in front of a full crowd again that I think we might have been too amped up. The nerves needed to calm down a bit. Once they did, the team really took over and controlled the game." Holland Coach Dan Telgenhof said.

The Dutch were up by one after the first 13-12 but then were able to pull away thanks to their press and patience in their half court offense.

"We locked in defensively and held them to single digits the rest of the way," Telgenhof said.

Holland was led in scoring by senior Ellie Zomer with 16 and junior Ari Gray also with 16. Contributing seven apiece were Julia Kooyer and Beka Stilwell.

Holland plays away at Northview on Friday night.

West Ottawa 58, Gull Lake 34

The Panthers opened the season with a bang taking a 41-13 first half lead as Gabby Reynolds (19), Grace Pedersen (eight), Molly Borski and Natalie Wilcox (six each) paced the scoring during the run.

The third quarter was a different story as the home team out scored the Panthers 17-0. The Panthers righted the ship in the final period outscoring Gull Lake 18-4 to seal the victory.

Overall, Reynolds lead all scorers with 22 points, Pedersen had 11, Borski and Wilcox had eight apiece and Chelsea Overbeek hit two 3-pointers to finish with six points.

West Ottawa travels to the Civic Center onFriday to take on Holland Christian.

Comstock 36, Fennville 8

Comstock outscored the Blackhawks 8-2 in the first quarter and kept the lead going into the half 18-3. Fennville continued to trail entering the fourth quarter 29-7.

"Offensively we struggled as we were only able to score 8 points on the night. We know we need to produce more points offensively in order to compete. We rolled out two freshmen, two sophomores, and a senior that hasn’t played since 8th grade - so there will be some growing pains along the way. Defensively though I thought our girls played very well and our effort was great tonight. I’m proud of our resiliency and how hard we fought, and I love how we stayed together throughout the adversity that we were up against," Fennville coach Josh Weimer said.

Senior Carmen Tencate, and freshmen Lila Rosema led the Blackhawks in scoring with four points each.
