Girls basketball: Oswell, Stafford roll at home

Dec. 15—Before the 2022-23 season began, Stafford High girls basketball coach Scott Martin called Drea Oswell "the heartbeat" of the Bulldogs.

The senior forward showed why Wednesday night.

Oswell recorded a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds to lead Stafford to a 47-19 win over Portland in a non-conference game at home.

The Bulldogs jumped out to an 11-3 advantage after a quarter and never faltered. The hosts stretched their lead to 23-7 at the half and 40-13 after three quarters.

Jaelyn Moulton added 10 points and six steals in the win while twin sister Andrea had nine points and four steals. Camden Smith contributed seven points, 13 rebounds and five steals.

Morganne Pineda scored seven points to lead the Highlanders (0-1).

Stafford is off until Dec. 22 when it hosts Cheney Tech.

COVENTRY 48, WINDHAM TECH 22. Charlotte Jordan scored 28 points as the host Patriots to a non-conference win.

Coventry (2-0), which received votes in the GameTimeCT/New Haven Register preseason state media poll, led 16-4 after a quarter and never looked back. The Patriots led 34-6 at the half.

Jordan, a senior, added eight steals in the win while Anaka Eaton recorded a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Isabella DeJesus' five points paced Windham Tech (0-1).

The Patriots are back in action tonight when they travel to Hebron to play RHAM.

FARMINGTON 55, SOMERS 49. Sarah Bertolette's 18 points paced the River Hawks as they won a non-league game in Somers.

Somers (1-1) built a 15-4 lead after a quarter but Farmington (1-1) outscored the hosts 14-0 in the second quarter to take a three-point lead into the locker room.

The River Hawks led 40-35 entering the final quarter. Somers tied the game midway through the fourth, but were unable to complete the comeback.

Sophomore Sydney Cassidy scored a game-high 19 points for Somers. Twins Devon and Deidre Dalessio each added 11 points for the Spartans.

Somers concludes its home stand Saturday when it entertains Guilford.
