Girls basketball: Who is the Player of the Week?

Last week, Journal News/lohud girls basketball fans turned out online in huge force to vote for the Girls Basketball Player of the Week.

With coaches nominating eight athletes for the honor, 66,687 votes were cast.

Pleasantville sophomore guard Meghan Raefski, who netted 52 points over two Panther wins, garnered 29,650 votes to gain the honor. The runner-up, Putnam Valley's Nai Torres, also drew huge support with 22,011 votes.

This week, coaches have nominated 11 athletes for their play from Jan. 16-22.

There's no limit on the number of times you may vote. But vote soon. The poll will close at noon on Tuesday with results subsequently appearing on social media.

Madison Bortstein, Ardsley

The freshman point guard buried 21 points, had seven assists and got seven rebounds in the Panthers' league win over Byram Hills.

Cat Carrafiello, Briarcliff

The senior guard, who's committed to play for Middlebury College, helped lead the Bears to three straight wins last week. She totaled 66 points over the span, also pulling down 22 rebounds and dishing out 13 assists.

Grace Corelli, Byram Hills

The junior point guard, who's averaging 15.7 points per game, poured in 22 points, knocking down three 3s and going 3-for-4 from the foul line, in a loss to Ardsley. She also hit for 16 points with nine coming via 3s as the Bobcats recorded their first league win of the season, topping Sleepy Hollow.

Darnavaiya Johnson, Roosevelt

The junior point guard appeared all over the score sheet in a 48-36 win over Alexander Hamilton. She poured in 28 points and had seven assists, five steals and four rebounds.

Miranda Martin, John Jay-Cross River

The senior guard and post player came up big in two Wolf wins. Against Clarkstown South, she had 18 points and four rebounds and against Yorktown, she poured in 22 points and got 10 boards.

Mady Moroney, Pearl River

The junior guard was key as Pearl River went 3-0 last week. In an upset win over higher-ranked Tappan Zee, she had a game-high 18 points and added three steals. Moroney also had 10 points, two assists and two steals against Nyack and had a game-high 17 points and had two steals against Lakeland.

Angelica Rios, Ossining

The senior forward poured in a career-high 30 points, draining a career-high six 3-pointers, in a 59-50 win over Fox Lane.

Emma Rose, Horace Greeley

The RIT-bound senior guard sank 10 3-pointers over two games. In a win over Fox Lane, she hit for 19 points and grabbed six rebounds. And in a win over Port Chester, she had 12 points and six rebounds.

Jessica Sterbans, Mahopac

The RPI-bound senior forward hit for 23 points and crashed the boards for 19 rebounds in a win over Poughkeepsie.

Reina Thalheimer Santamaria, Rye Country Day

The senior guard returned from injury to average 17.5 points, six rebounds, two assists and three steals over two games.

Carley Voce, Clarkstown South

The freshman guard poured in 28 points and pulled down six rebounds in a win over North Rockland. She also had 18 points and three blocks in a loss to Clarkstown North.
