Girls Basketball: Watertown splits weekend games out west; Arlington tops No. 3 Aberdeen Christian

BELLE FOURCHE — A strong third quarter propelled Belle Fourche to a 52-39 non-conference girls basketball win over Watertown on Saturday afternoon.

The Arrows (8-5) went 1-1 on the weekend trip out west, beating Douglas 56-37 on Friday night.

Watertown trailed only 26-24 at halftime before the Broncs took control with a 15-6 surge in the third period.

Mataya Ward led Belle Fourche (9-5) to its sixth-straight win with 16 points. Grace Clooten added eight and Dylan Stedillie seven. Kaylin Garza hauled in seven rebounds.

Jaida Young’s 12 points and six rebounds led the Arrows, who also got eight points apiece from Maddy Rohde and Emery Thury. Grace Corey added five rebounds.

Belle Fourche drained 23 of 45 field-goal attempts for 51 percent compared to Watertown’s 13 of 52 for 25 percent. The Arrows held a 30-25 edge on the boards.

Rohde scored 17 points and Kendall Paulson 12 to carry the Arrows past Douglas on Friday.

Rohde buried four of the nine 3-pointers for Watertown, which made 22 of 60 field-goal attempts for 37 percent.

Young added nine points and nine rebounds, Jade Lund seven points and Thury five points and seven rebounds. The Arrows finished with 32 rebounds.

Douglas (2-8) was led by Lamara Castaneda’s nine points, Keana Walton’s seven points and Savannah Gray’s 12 rebounds.

The Patriots made 10 of 40 field-goal attempts for 25 percent and hauled in 37 rebounds. They committed 19 turnovers, 10 more than the Arrows.

Watertown visits Sioux Falls Lincoln on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Arlington 50, Aberdeen Christian 40 — Arlington knocked off third-rated Class B Aberdeen Christian with 11 points, 18 rebounds, three assists and three steals from Hadley Carlson.

Harley Johnson contributed nine points, Addalyn Steffensen seven and Ellisyn Vincent six for the Cardinals (9-4). Jolyssa Steffensen made five steals.

Mallory Miller’s 22 points and 18 rebounds topped Aberdeen Christian (11-2).

Castlewood 53, Deubrook Area 51 OT — Maddie Horn hit the game-tying shot in the closing seconds of regulation and scored 28 points to lead the Warriors to the Dakota Valley Conference win.

Castlewood (11-3, 6-2), which trailed by 12 points in the third quarter, also got 12 points from Presley Knecht and eight from Mackenzie Everson.

Deubrook Area (9-4, 4-2) received 12 points from Miranda Moravetz and 11 apiece from Carley Landmark and Ellie Koenig.

Florence-Henry 48, Winner 43 — Florence-Henry (12-1) notched the win in the Sacred Hoops First National Bank Classic at Sioux Falls with 16 points from Trinity Watson, 13 from Caylin Kelly and 10 from Taylor Watson. Kelly also had 12 rebounds and Taylor Watson nine rebounds and five assists.

Reese Schmidt contributed six points and Carlie Moe six rebounds for the Falcons.

Bella Swedlund paced Winner (6-7) with 20 points. Kelsey Sachtjen added 10.

Great Plains Lutheran 53, North Central 44 — The Panthers (9-6) used 13 points from Halle Bauer, 12 from Mali York and 11 from Bryn Holmen to record the non-conference win. Holman also tallied 16 rebounds and four assists and Madeline Prahl six rebounds.

Brittney Frickson had 19 points and Amree Vander Vorst 10 for North Central (4-10).

Tiospa Zina 51, Omaha Nation (Neb.) 40 — Alexia Quinn poured in 27 points to lead the Wambdi (12-2) to victory in the third-place game of the 28th Girls Dakota Oyate Challenge. Kennadee Bissonette scored 12 points.

Ethan 55, Waubay-Summit 29 — Hannah Bartscher scored 22 points, Ava Lingemann 15 and Bella Nesheim 11 to lead Ethan (8-5) to victory in the Sacred Hoops First National Bank Classic at Sioux Falls.

Livia Tomac notched 11 points, Kailee Berger eight and Eva Benike six for Waubay-Summit (5-9).

Others — James Valley Christian (7-6) topped Lake Preston (6-8) 58-23 in a non-conference game, Sioux Valley (10-4) defeated Beresford 58-47 in the third-place game of the Big East Conference tournament and Britton-Hecla (6-4) blasted Wyndmere-Lidgerwood, N.D. 73-36. No other details were reported.

Florence-Henry 66, Great Plains Lutheran 38 — Florence-Henry nailed down the Eastern Coteau Conference championship by putting five players in double figures.

Taylor Watson tallied 14points, Reese Schmidt 12, Aubrie Hartley 11 and Trinity Watson and Caylin Kelly 10 each for the Falcons (11-1, 4-0). Watson also snared seven rebounds and Carlie Moe and Kelly each six. Kelly contributed seven steals and six assists and Moe five steals.

GPL (8-6, 3-1) were led by the 13-point performances of Halle Bauer and Madeline Prahl. Mali York added eight. Bryn Holmen hauled in 12 rebounds and Prahl and Kimberly Goens each six.

Milbank 55, Redfield 38 — Maurina Street tallied 22 points and seven rebounds, Tyra Berry 13 and six and Isabella Anderson 10 points, four assists and five steals to lead Milbank (6-6, 4-3) in the Northeast Conference game. Sierra Wenzl scored eight points.

Gracie Fast’s 15 points and Chelsea Smith’s 12 points and nine rebounds paced Redfield (4-8, 2-4).

Hamlin 53, Webster Area 14 — Kami Wadsworth’s 28-point performance guided Hamlin to the Northeast Conference win. The Chargers improved to 9-2 overall and 4-2 in the NEC with their ninth-straight victory.

Ally Abraham contributed eight points, Addie Neuendorf seven and Brooklyn Brandriet five.

Paige Snell finished with four points for the Bearcats, 4-8 and 0-4.

De Smet 63, Colman-Egan 52 — Fifth-rated Class B De Smet pushed its record to 14-1 overall and 7-0 in the Dakota Valley Conference with the win.

Kennadi Buchholz produced 18 points and seven rebounds, Emma Albrecht 17 and five and Jada Burke 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Alyssa Asleson and Camryn Schmidt each scored six points.

Mackenzie Hemmer led Colman-Egan (10-4, 3-2) with 22 points and seven rebounds. Brynlee Landis followed with 11 points.

Warner 53, Waubay-Summit 25 — Warner (8-4) won the non-conference game with 15 points from Ava Nilsson, 14 from Kyra Marcuson and 13 from Kamryn Anderson.

Kailee Berger scored nine points and Tasha Zirbel six for Waubay-Summit (5-8).

Aberdeen Christian 51, Wilmot 33 — Third-rated Class B Aberdeen Christian improved to 11-1 on the season with 25 points from Mallory Miller and 10 from Chloe Holt.

Madeline Redmund finished with 18 points for Wilmot (0-12). Addison Heinje added six and Marissa Getzlaff five.

Aberdeen Roncalli 53, Sisseton 51 — Morgan Fiedler’s field goal with 14 seconds left helped top-rated Class B Roncalli (11-1, 5-1) slip past Sisseton (8-2, 4-1) in the Northeast Conference game.

Fiedler finished with 17 points and Olivia Hanson 14 for Roncalli.

Hannah Leverson scored 20 points, Tara Nelson 12 and Emmalee Nielsen eight for the Redmen, who had an eight-game winning streak snapped.

Garretson 52, Sioux Valley 44 — The Cossacks (9-4) fell to Garretson in the semifinals of the Big East Conference tournament.

Logan Bly’s 20 points and 13 rebounds paced Garretson (8-6).

Reagan Johnson recorded 12 points, 11 rebounds and three steals for Sioux Valley. Isabella Bloker chipped in with 11 points, Keyra Kruse 10 points and Julia Schneider five assists.

Lower Brule 71, Tiospa Zina 38 — Courtney Traversie scored 17 points, Bailyn LaRoche 17 and Kharmon Wells 12 to lead Lower Brule (7-6) to the semifinal win in the 28th Girls Dakota Oyate Challenge at Huron.

Alexia Quinn notched 15 points and Kennadee Bissonette 10 for Tiospa Zina (1-12).
