Girls basketball roundup: Bulldogs bounce back against Islanders

RUDYARD — The Rudyard Bulldogs returned to Eastern UP Conference play, and cruised past the Cedarville-DeTour Islanders 51-19 Tuesday night.

Brooklynn Besteman scored a game-high 18 points to lead the Bulldogs (8-6 overall, 4-2 EUPC). Emily Kopitz added nine points and Karlee Mayer had eight points for Rudyard. The Bulldogs were without starting guard Tristin Smith for a second straight game, and coming off a non-conference loss at Munising Monday.

Rudyard led 23-9 at halftime against Cedarville-DeTour and continued to pull away in the second half. The Bulldogs’ defense limited the Islanders to single digits in every quarter.

“Great all around play from everyone,” Rudyard coach Carlos Molina said. “It was good to see a team effort. I am proud of them all. If we can play like this the rest of the season it will be great. We need to get better with our free throws as they have been ill-fated all season.

“Besteman, (Meagan) Postma and Kopitz had a great night on the boards. Mayer, Besteman and Bradley had some key steals. (Delaney) MacDowell had a great all around game and it was great to see her use her speed. All in all it was a great team effort tonight.”

Hayley Kohlmann scored six points for the Islanders (8-8 overall, 2-3 EUPC).

Rudyard plays host to St. Ignace in a Straits Area Conference game Thursday night. Cedarville-DeTour has a home game against Pickford Thursday.
