Girls Basketball Roundup: Sheridan shuts down Watterson in season opener

THORNVILLE — Jamisyn Stinson poured in 20 points, as Division II state runner-up Sheridan opened the season with a 46-28 victory over Columbus Watterson on Tuesday at Glen Hursey Gymnasium.

The Generals were down 10-9 after one quarter but took a 26-19 lead into the half and were up 39-21 through three quarters.

Zanesville 60, Maysville 37: Jersey Draughn scored 17 of her team-high 19 points in the first half, as the Lady Devils opened the season by topping the host Panthers in non-league action on Tuesday.

Draughn had 11 points in the first quarter and Rylee McCuen and Kandrea Sowers added four points apiece, as Zanesville led 19-7 after one. Their advantage grew to 42-15 at the half, as five Lady Devils scored in the second quarter, including a pair of 3s by Jada Seyfried.

Sowers added 14 points, Seyfried chipped in 10 and McCuen tallied eight for the winners.

Jerzie Blackketter led the Panthers (0-2) with 12 points, while Taelyn Dickinson and Emerson Williams added 10 points apiece.

Rosecrans 40, Grove City Christian 26: Jenna McLaughlin collected 20 of her game-high 22 points over the final three quarters, as the Bishops (2-0) picked up a road win in the Mid-State League Cardinal Division.

Ella Lambert scored five of her nine points in the first quarter to put Rosecrans up 9-8 going to the second. McLaughlin had six in the second, as the game was tied at 18 at the half. She added four points in third to help Rosecrans take a 26-20 lead into the fourth where she scored 10.

McLaughlin also grabbed 14 rebounds with six steals and four assists, Lambert had six steals and three assists and Maddie Bernett added five boards for the winners, who made 18 of 40 field goals and forced 21 turnovers.

The Eagles were held to 9-of-37 shooting and out-rebounded 33-23.

Tri-Valley 64, New Albany 55: The host Scotties slowly stretched out their lead in their season-opening win.

The game was tied at 11 through one quarter before Tri-Valley took a 24-23 edge into the half and led 42-37 after three quarters.

Watkins Memorial 39, Philo 27: Olivia Dement hit four 3s and scored 13 points, as the visiting Electrics held a 17-15 advantage at the half, but the Warriors held them to 10 second-half points in Tuesday's season opener.

Kalleigh Kennie had 15 points and Cameryn Wheeler added 12 points for Watkins, which led 13-8 after one quarter and 28-24 through three quarters.

River View 30, Licking Valley 28: Lily Yoder and Payton Cabe combined for 21 points, as the host Lady Bears improve to 1-1 with a comeback win.

Yoder had four points in the first quarter, as the Lady Bears and Panthers were tied at 6 through one, and Cabe scored six of her 10 in the second to put them up 14-13 at the half.

Licking Valley took a 20-18 advantage into the fourth, but four players scored in a 12-8 fourth for River View, including four by Cabe and three points apiece from Yoder and Elaina Brenly to complete the rally.

Strasburg 55, Coshocton 10: The Lady 'Skins trailed 13-5 after one quarter, but never got the offense going from there in a road loss to the host Tigers on Tuesday.

Savannah Bartlett and Isabelle Lauvray had five points each for Coshocton, while Riley Thomas paced Strasburg with 26.

John Glenn 57, New Philadelphia 42: Riley Zamensky and Mya Oliver combined for 32 points, as the visiting Muskies won their season opener on Monday.

Zamensky scored six in the first quarter, and Oliver, Kylah Morgan and Aleea Musselman each hit 3s to help the Muskies build a 23-14 lead through one quarter.

That advantage was 34-21 at the half, Zamensky scored seven of her 17 in the third to extend the lead to 47-33, and the Muskies made 8 of 10 free throws in the fourth to seal the win.

Oliver finished with 15 points, Mckinzi Linscott tallied seven points and 14 boards and Zamensky also grabbed seven rebounds in the win.

John Glenn reserves won 48-41 behind 15 points from Emmy Babcock and eight by Ashlyn Chrisman.

Federal Hocking 43, Morgan 39: The host Lancers rallied past the Raiders, who dropped to 0-2, in a non-league game on Monday.

Odessa Smith led Morgan with 15 points.

Federal Hocking 49, Crooksville 18: Lexi Van Meter scored 10 points and Sonni Nelson added seven points, as the Ceramics fell in their opener on Saturday.

Junior High Basketball

Sheridan eighth grade girls defeated Philo 27-22 behind eight points from Hailey Mueller. Ava White and Emily Stockdale had six points each for Philo. Sheridan seventh grade topped Philo 28-20, as Brenna Moorehead had 10 points and Nora Cooperider nine in the win. Reagan Miller's nine points led Philo.
