Girls basketball roundup: LQPV stays on track against YME

Jan. 20—GRANITE FALLS — Taylor Shelstad fought off her shooting slump, helping the Lac qui Parle Valley Eagles dominate Yellow Medicine East on Friday.

Shelstad, a senior guard, scored 23 points in LQPV's 73-36 victory.

"She has been in a little bit of a shooting slump, so it was nice to see her get back to normal tonight," LQPV head coach Dylan Erickson said. "We go as she goes."

The Eagles caused the Sting to turn the ball over 22 times, notching 13 steals and one block.

Shelstad had six of the 13 steals. LQPV senior center Camryn Lee had the sole block.

"We can score but it's been our defensive pressure all year," Erickson said. "We're doing a really good job of that and it fuels our offense."

LQPV outscored YME 40-14 in the second half after taking a 33-22 lead into halftime.

Erickson said his Eagles' grew more patient throughout the game and that it was the difference-maker. He also likes that he can count on different players nightly.

"It's a luxury that some small schools don't get," Erickson said. "If one girl is off or is being guarded, we can combat it by putting the girls in different situations."

Eagles sophomore guard Jalyn Lee followed Shelstad with 12 points. Camryn Lee had 10, junior guard Isabel Gerdes and senior guard Rylee Lund both had eight, and senior guard Ayanna Gipson had seven.

"You never know who can get it going," Erickson said. "We know when it comes to playoff time, we'll need to have that depth."

YME's top scorers were senior forward Hannah Stark and freshman forward Alana Almich. Stark led with 10 points and Almich had nine. Senior guard Stella Schuler recorded 10 rebounds. The Sting play at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Canby.

LQPV's depth has led it to a 12-2 record and a No. 20 ranking in Class A. The Eagles beat Minneota for the first time in program history Tuesday and play No. 4 Hancock at 2:15 p.m. Saturday in Hancock.

"It should be a really fun one," Erickson said.
