Girls basketball roundup: Rockville's consistency starting to show

Jan. 13—After a rough start to the season, the Rockville High girls basketball team has found some consistency of late.

Sophomore Liana Wheelock-Bonet scored a team-leading 12 points as the Rams topped Computer Science 62-30 in a non-league game in Vernon.

The win is the second in three games for Rockville (3-7). Following an 0-4 start to the season, the Rams have gone 3-3 in their last six games.

Rockville led the Eagles (3-6) 22-7 after a quarter and 37-12 at the half. The Rams extended their edge to 53-20 after three.

Layla Tate and Julia Szuminski each scored 11 points in the win, with Szuminski adding seven rebounds. Teammate Anaya Tolton finished with nine points and six assists while Nah'ziah Ford grabbed 13 rebounds.

Shaniqua Thomas led all scorers with 19 points for Computer Science. Teammate De'Mya Barrett, a freshman, chipped in 10 points.

Both teams play today. Rockville travels to Suffield while the Eagles entertain Wethersfield.

BOLTON 51, SOMERS 44 (OT). In Bolton, Makenna Graves scored 12 points, including a late basket to send the game into overtime, as the Bulldogs won a NCCC game.

It's the fifth win in a row for Bolton (8-1).

The Bulldogs trailed by 15 at the half before rallying. Bolton outscored Somers (6-4) 18-10 in the third and 13-6 in the fourth.

Graves' late score tied the game at 40 and sent it into overtime. Teammate Niya Islam opened the overtime period with a three-pointer, one of three she made in the game, to put Bolton ahead.

The Bulldogs went 6-for-12 from the foul line and received a layup from Emma Diehl to pull away. Bolton outscored Somers 11-4 in the extra session.

Diehl finished with a team-high 15 points and added eight steals. Graves contributed seven steals. Islam ended up with 14 points while Isabel Kenney had eight.

Eliana Wood scored a game-high 19 points for Somers, which led 13-5 after a quarter and 24-9 at the half. Four of Wood's seven makes came from deep.

Devon Dalessio added 11 points including three 3s for the Spartans while Sydney Cassidy had 10 points.

Bolton is back in action Tuesday when it travels to Hartford to play SMSA, the same night the Spartans are at Rockville.

WINDSOR LOCKS 49, SMSA 33. Maeve McGinnis' double-double led the charge for the Raiders in their NCCC win in Hartford.

The sophomore finished with 12 points and 21 rebounds for Windsor Locks (4-4). She also contributed four blocks.

The Raiders led 8-6 after a quarter before the Tigers (3-3) roared to life. SMSA pulled in front 12-11 three minutes into the second.

But the visitors closed the half on a 12-0 run, highlighted by eight points from sophomore Jasmine Hurdle, to take the lead.

SMSA trimmed the deficit to nine, 34-25, entering the fourth before Locks outscored the hosts 15-8 in the fourth to ice the game.

Hurdle finished with a team-high 15 points while adding five assists and six steals. SMSA freshman Kayleigh Reed led all scorers with 18 points.

Windsor Locks returns to the court Saturday when it plays Westfield (Mass.) at Western New England University.

ENFIELD 54, TOLLAND 19. Sydney Marshall recorded a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds as host Enfield picked up a CCC East win.

Enfield (8-3), which received votes in this week's GameTimeCT/New Haven Register state media poll, led 15-3 after a quarter and 18-11 at the half before outscoring Tolland (3-6) 30-3 in the third.

Marshall, a junior, added three blocks and three steals to her double-double. Alyssa Rossignol finished with a team-high 19 points and contributed five rebounds and four steals.

Taylor Gochee and Madi Archer each had six points in the win.

Annelise Martens and Mackenzie Wood scored four points apiece to lead Tolland.

Enfield takes on Northampton (Mass.) at Western New England University Saturday. Meanwhile, Tolland is off until Wednesday when it travels to East Windsor.

WINDSOR 56, NEW BRITAIN 26. In Windsor, Ayanna Franks' double-double of 32 points and 13 rebounds led the way as the Warriors won a CCC North game.

The win comes after two straight losses for Windsor (7-3), which received votes in this week's GameTimeCT/New Haven Register state media poll.

The hosts led 24-2 after a quarter Thursday and never looked back. The Warriors extended the lead to 33-5 at the half.

Mikaela Williams finished with 13 points in the win. Yari Fernandez scored 10 points to lead New Britain (5-4).

Windsor hosts East Hartford Monday.
