ERIE – Whiteford took away Erie Mason's top option.

So the Eagles found another.

Lizzy Liedel topped 1,000 career points and scored 47 in Mason's win over Blissfield Tuesday, but she was limited to just 8 points Friday.

Kaylie Bash picked up the slack.

Playing with a mask to protect her broken nose, the junior netted a career-high 18 points to lead Mason to a 50-42 victory.

"They focused their attention on Lizzy tonight," Mason coach Josh Sweigert said. "Lizzy got a lot of attention and Kaylie did a great job getting to the basket and getting to the free-throw line.

"Kaylie has been working on the offensive side of her game. She plays great defense and now she's putting the offensive side together. It's great to see her hard work paying off."

Madelyn Thomas and Anna VanBrandt took the primary defensive assignments against Liedel as Whiteford employed a triangle-and-two.

“We played pretty good defense on her, but the rest of the girls stepped up and hit shots for them,” Whiteford coach Les Manley said.

A big first quarter and a strong stand at the end made the difference for Mason, which improved to 3-1.

The Eagles scored 19 points in the first quarter and led 21-5 at one point. It was 25-13 at the half.

Whiteford worked its way back into the game in the second half, slicing the Mason lead to 41-40 in the fourth quarter.

"We started out well again the in the first quarter," Sweigert said. "Whiteford chipped away at the lead going into the fourth quarter. We did a great job of finishing the game in the final minutes."

Liedel collected 10 rebounds and 6 steals, and Chloe Grodi netted a career-high 7 points.

"Whiteford came to play," Sweigert said. "We had to match their intensity. I am proud of the girls for this win."

Whiteford's Kinzie Kohler led all scorers with 19 points.

The Bobcats are 0-3, but Manley believes they are close to breaking through.

“I am extremely proud of how they played," Manley said.

Monroe 52, Ann Arbor Skyline 41

ANN ARBOR – Olivia Bussell fouled out with about 5 minutes remaining but Monroe had other players step up to help maintain the lead and help the Trojans improve to 2-1 this season.

It was a flashback to last year when Bussell fouled out and Skyline rallied for victory.

The result was more positive for the Trojans this season.

"She fouled out and I thought, 'Crap, here we go again,'" Monroe assistant Tom Theisen said. "But we had girls come off the bench and hit some big shots."

BOYS BASKETBALL: Jefferson, New Boston Huron win, Monroe nipped

Emma Modica hit a pair of three-pointers in the fourth and Madison Faryniarz was 3-for-4 from the free-throw line in the closing minutes to help Monroe maintain its advantage. Skyline came within 6 points.

"Every time they made a run, we would make a mini-run to push it back to that 10 point lead," Theisen said. "The last 5 minutes were without (Bussell), and good or bad, she's 70 percent of our team, as far as scoring goes. It was a good win because everybody played the role they needed play and stepped up when they needed to step up."

Monroe led Skyline 27-12 at halftime.

Bussell led Monroe with 13 points. Modica and Sophia Bussell added 9 apiece.

MELVINDALE – Jefferson stretched its winning streak to three games to start the season in dominant fashion.

The Bears (3-0) leaned on a strong first half from Abby Roberts to take a commanding 25-9 lead into halftime. Roberts scored 12 of her game-high 14 points before the intermission.

Melvindale won the battle in the third quarter 9-8 but was then held scoreless by Jefferson in the final period.

Only four girls scored for Jefferson in the rout. Reanne Roberts had 13 points, and Ellie Hintz and Sydney Masserant added 6 apiece.

Gibraltar Carlson 50, Dearborn Edsel Ford 38

GIBRALTAR – Abigail Carafelli carved out a role for herself in Gibraltar Carlson's starting lineup late last season.

The freshman was still just learning the ropes and never scored more than 5 points in a game.

But that experience proved crucial heading into her sophomore season.

Carafelli scored a career-high 14 points Friday night.

"She came out strong and I could really see the fire in her tonight," Carlson coach Kristin Fabrizio said. "I think she'll be a key player for us this season. I can see her confidence growing on the court and she executed tonight. I hope we see more of that this season.

"She's a threat. She has good ball handling and a good outside shot but she's strong in the paint too. I'm really optimistic for her."

Carafelli scored 10 in the second half, matching teammate Elyse Miller, who led all scorers with 15 points. The duo helped Carlson (2-1) hold off a fourth-quarter surge from Edsel Ford.

Emma Shimizu added 11 points, doing all of her damage in the first half to help Carlson take a 30-12 lead at halftime.

Edsel Ford was held to just 2 points in the first quarter.

"We were really strong offensively," Fabrizio said. "We were pushing the ball up the court and really finishing at the rim, which was great. I really wanted to work on our transition, pushing the ball up the court and playing a fast game. It helped us get off to a quick start."

Summerfield 42, Britton Deerfield 20

PETERSBURG – Abby Haller scored a season-best 16 points with 4 rebounds and 3 steals to lead Summerfield to victory over Britton Deefield Friday.

Haller did all her damage in the first half, including 11 points in the second quarter to put the Bulldogs ahead 29-12 at halftime.

Britton Deerfield was held to just 7 points in the second half.

"We got off to a little slow start in the first quarter and finished strong, taking a 13-8 lead after one," Summerfield coach Mickey Moody said. "Then in the second quarter we executed well offensively and played strong defense.

"We played a solid second half on defense ... (but) our offense in the second half just got real lethargic after we got a bigger lead and stopped being aggressive."

Destanee Smith added 9 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists for Summerfield (2-2), and Faith Secor had 6 points and 6 rebounds.

Summerfield won the JV contest 25-8 behind 10 points from Marissa Eastman.

Saline 38, Bedford 29

SALINE – Saline scored 17 points in the fourth quarter to slip away with a victory against Bedford.

The Mules trailed just 32-29 with just over 3 minutes remaining but faded down the stretch.

"We played competitively," Bedford coach Bill Ryan said. "We had a couple empty possessions (at the end) and they capitalized on it and scored. Then they iced it at the foul line."

It was the first game for Bedford after last week's season opener against Sylvania Southview was postponed.

The Mules played without leading scorer Grace Ryan, but had strong contributions from a pair of freshmen. Aubrey Hensley led with 12 points and Victoria Gray added 8 points and 14 rebounds.

The Wildcats led just 26-20 after two quarters but outscored the Vikings 20-12 in the third quarter.

"We played a great first half," Dundee coach Josh Salley said. "Came out of the halftime a little slow. Had a few too many turnovers and got in foul trouble. We're a young team and still learning how to play together. Overall, I am pleased with the way they played and fought the whole game."

Mckenna Salley led Dundee (1-1) with 15 points, and Heather Spare and Faith Stahl added 8 apiece.
