Girls Basketball: Tough opening assignment for Monroe
TECUMSEH – Monroe girls basketball coach John Mason has a lot to learn about his team early in the season.
A season-opening game against a strong Tecumseh team probably was not the best formula for the Trojans, who suffered a 59-14 road loss Tuesday.
It was 21-3 after one quarter and 36-4 at the half. Monroe didn’t reach double figures until the final period.
“Early in the season, we need to figure a lot of things out about lineups and rotations,” Mason said.
Alli Zajac led Tecumseh with 17 points and Chesney Wilke added 12.
“Tecumseh is a good team,” Mason said. “They are well managed and have been playing ball together for a long time.”
Sophia Bussell topped Monroe with 9.
"Losses sometimes are a good thing," Mason said. "We’ll get better."
Tecumseh also won the junior varsity game.

Erie Mason 51, Airport 47
CARLETON − Airport pushed back in the second half but Erie Mason held on in the fourth quarter Tuesday in the season opener for both teams.
Mason led 28-19 at halftime behind a strong start from senior Kaylie Bash, who scored all 9 of her points before the break.
Mackenna Gallaher and Audrey Trainor scored 14 apiece for the Eagles. Trainor was 12-for-17 from the free-throw line, including 7 in the fourth quarter.
"Credit Erie Mason down the stretch, they were clutch at the free-throw line," Airport coach Darrell Mossburg said. "It was typical first-game mistakes, including myself. We will take a long look at the tape and look at what we did good and what needs to improve. We played really well in spurts but at this level we must do a better job of rebounding and limit turnovers."
Olivia Gratz (15 points) and Brenna Baker (12 points) led the the Jets.
