Girls basketball: Vote now for the lohud Player of the Week

The season is just getting started, but several players have already had an impact.

We'll pause each Monday to highlight some of the top performers over the previous week. Readers will then have an opportunity to vote for a favorite. The poll will close at 1 p.m. each Tuesday and the winner will be is featured on various lohud.com social media platforms.

Game story: Tappan Zee deals Mahopac a humbling loss to open the season

Alexa Charles, Sleepy Hollow

The senior guard led the Horsemen to the Howard Godwin Holiday Tournament championship, collecting 40 points, nine rebounds and four steals against Mamaroneck. Charles reached 1,000 career points with a layup at the buzzer, finishing with 24 in a title-game win over Westlake.

Kayleigh Heckel, Port Chester

The sophomore guard helped the Rams open 2-0 with a pair of triple-doubles. She had 33 points, 15 rebounds, 11 steals and six assists against Mount Vernon and finished with 40 points, 13 steals and 12 assists against Yonkers.

Tyler Hormazabal, Lakeland

The senior guard opened the Section 1 season with 22 points, nine rebounds and five steals in a win over John Jay-Cross River, then picked up MVP at the Hornets' own Relay for Life Tournament getting 26 points, seven steals and four assists in a win over Croton and 30 points in a win over Clarkstown North.

Dana Phelan opened the season with 20 points in a win over Mahopac, then scored 16 in an overtime victory at Byram Hills.

Dana Phelan, Tappan Zee

The senior guard hit four 3s to kill each Mahopac comeback bid and finished with a game-high 20 points in the win. Phelan added16 points and five rebounds in an overtime win against Byram Hills, their second victory over a ranked team last week.

Nicole Sanfilippo, Ardsley

The senior guard came up with 23 points, six steals and four assists against Dobbs Ferry in the opening round of the Warnock tournament at Irvington. She led a second-half charge against the host school in a championship game comeback, finishing with 29 points.
