Girls Best of the Week: Marion Harding, Pleasant get tennis wins

MARION — Marion Harding and Pleasant scored some wins on the tennis court last week.

The Presidents topped River Valley 5-0. Taryn Simmers beat Aliyah Bennett 6-0, 6-1; Audrey Feasel beat Shayla Pappert 6-7, 6-3, 6-1; Sierra Silverio beat Gabby Cametti 6-2, 6-4; Jayde Pineda and Autumn Silverio beat Macyn Daniels and Addison Comstock 6-4, 1-6, 6-1; and Raina Smith and Sophie Beechum beat Rose Linville and Amelia Young 6-3, 6-0.

Against Clear Fork, the same Harding lineup swept to a 5-0 victory with all coming in two sets. In a 3-2 loss to Delaware Hayes, Simmers won in first singles 6-0, 6-0, and Silverio won in third singles 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Pleasant also blanked the Colts 5-0. Maura Murphy, Katie Jordan, Hannah Miller all took their singles matches, while Bailey Leslie and Kylie Klaiber won in first doubles, and Anna Wenig and Lauren West won in second doubles. In a 3-2 victory over Ontario, Murphy, Jordan and Miller all won their singles matches for the Spartans.

Here are some other highlights over the last week with area high school girls sports teams and athletes:

∎ Highland soccer got an assist from Amarie Morgan to Izzy Arnett-Tomasek from just outside the box for a game-winning goal to lift the team to a 2-1 victory over Shelby. Sophia Hinkle scored her first-ever varsity goal off an Arnett-Tomasek assist for the Scots.

∎ Mapleton stopped River Valley 3-2 in soccer. Makyha Rogers and Halle Snyder scored the goals for the Vikings, while Kiley Ratliff had an assist, and Kaya Brown saved 11 shots.

∎ Before winning the Mid Ohio Athletic Conference Girls Golf Tournament by 58 shots, Pleasant carded a 361 to finish second to Olentangy Orange's 349 at the Orange/Berlin Invitational. Dina Shah was second in the tournament with a 75, while Maura Murphy was third at 76. Maddie Murphy shot a 101 and Anna Songer a 109 for Pleasant.

Highland edged Northmor 193-198 at Wyandot Golf Course. CeCi Grassbaugh carded a 45, Mallory Jones a 46, Guinevere Jackson a 50 and Stevie Asher a 52 for the Scots.

∎ Ranked No. 3 in last week's Division II state volleyball coaches poll, Highland upended Ontario 3-0 with Camryn Miller scoring seven aces with 11 digs, Kameron Stover getting 17 kills and three aces, Larsen Terrill handing out 26 assists, Brooke Schott putting down nine kills and three blocks and Zoya Winkelfoos serving three aces. In a 3-0 win over Pleasant, the Scots were led by Schott's nine kills and three aces, Terrill's 29 assists and five aces, Stover's 11 kills and Miller's 18 digs.

∎ Pleasant knocked off Shelby 3-0 with Maddie Aurigemma leading the team with 10 kills, Lexi Olt and Kenzley Davis getting eight kills each and Sydney Smith and Madi Pendleton serving five aces apiece. The Spartans capped the weekend by finishing as runner-ups at the Elgin Classic. Olt and Aurigemma had 11 kills each and Emerson Williams 23 assists in a 2-0 win over Ridgemont, and the duo did the same with Williams getting 27 assists in a 2-0 win over North Union. In the final, Lexington won 2-0, but Olt had five kills and Williams 14 assists.

∎ North Union was down 2-0 to Graham and rallied to tie the match, but fell in the fifth set 15-10. The Wildcats went 2-1 at the Elgin Classic, getting 2-0 wins against the hosts and Cardinal Stritch.

∎ Cardington played in a three-way volleyball match with Pickerington North and Bellevue, scoring 2-1 wins over both. Cardington's Izzy Wickline posted 11 kills against North.

∎ Ridgedale defeated Elgin 3-0 with Hannah Cook scoring 17 points with 11 digs and 20 assists, Mya Brown scoring 13 points and 11 digs and Mylee Mullins serving three aces and 10 points. The Rockets were beaten 3-1 by Delaware Christian. Lauren Leslie had 11 kills, 19 digs, 10 points and three aces, while Grace Staton had 15 kills, 18 digs and four blocks, Mullins eight points and two blocks and Cook 29 assists.

∎ River Valley volleyball player Haleigh Creps was named MaxPreps/AVCA High School Player of the Week for Ohio last week, while teammate and setter Morgan Nemeth crested 1,000 assists for her varsity career last week, too.

∎ Cardington cross country competed at an event at Malone University, and Loey Hallabrin finished third in 20:33. Also winning medals for the Pirates were Magi Hallabrin (eighth, 22:12), Morgan White (16th, 22:55) and Gracie Meade (19th, 23:40).

∎ North Union's Kendal Music was 10th in 21:59 at a race at Dublin Jerome.

∎ Mount Gilead was 19th in a meet in Strongsville. Haley Pfeifer was 54th in 20:57 and Kimberly Staley 64th in 21:16.

∎ Pleasant raced at the Bill Brown Invitational at Ontario with Casey Kimball going sixth in 21:05, Kalyn Kimball going 24th in 22:36, Whitley Baumgartner 54th in 24:46 and Olivia Meyers 79th in 26:31.

∎ Northmor was fourth as a team at Ontario. Kate Lehman was third individually with a 20:32, while Natalie Hunter was seventh in 21:07, Ryann Brinkman 19th in 22:10, Lyla Bishop 40th in 23:46, Maizy Brinkman 46th in 24:17, Shelby Cooper 48th in 24:21 and Sarah Abrams 51st in 24:34

∎ Harding ran at the Bill Brown as well and ended 12th. Kamryn McDonald led the Presidents with a 42nd in 23:56, followed by Brooklynn Schultz (78th, 26:29), Freeara Coleman (85th, 26:59), Kyleigh Young (97th, 29:00), Hope Wheeler (108th, 33:17) and Shannon Malone (111th, 36:57).

  • River Valley volleyball's Haleigh Creps earned 899 of 1,841 votes (49 percent) to win last week's Marion Star Girls Best of the Week Performer Poll after putting down 38 kills on 74 of 82 hitting and adding eight blocks in a five-set loss to Galion. Other nominees were Ridgedale volleyball's Lauren Leslie, Marion Harding soccer's Taylor Iden, Pleasant golfer Dina Shah and Highland soccer's Bryn Orr.
