Girls Best of the Week: Marion Harding wins Rocket Baker Blast

Marion Harding won the first Rocket Baker Blast, an area high school bowling tournament hosted by Ridgedale at Cooper's Bowl.

The Presidents won the girls tournament, beating Shelby in the finals.

In a regular season matchup with state power Ashland, the Prexies fell 2,011-1,652. Kenzi Vaught shot a 206 and 184 for a 390 series and was followed by Hannah Mullennix with a 288, Peyton Apthorp with a 278 and Megan Adamson with a 260.

Here are some other highlights from around the area at the start of winter high school girls sports for teams and athletes:

∎ North Union's bowlers beat Tecumseh 2,047-1,736 with Montana Donohue pacing the Wildcats with a 372 series.

∎ Elgin topped Triad 53-44 in basketball. Sam Girton had 13 points, Madison Hill 12 and Gracie Isler eight for the Comets.

∎ North Union opened the girls basketball season with a 47-32 win over Cardington. For the Wildcats, Aubrey Benedict scored 14 points with five steals and three assists, and Allison Price put in 13 points, while Jada Davis had five rebounds and Taran Moran took away four steals. For Cardington, Lydia Hess led with 10 points and three steals, followed by Madison Linkous with nine points and Madison Caulkins and Abigail Hardwick with seven rebounds each.

∎ North Union fell behind 19-5 in the first quarter and tried to come back against Mechanicsburg in a 62-56 loss. Allison Price posted 23 points, five steals and two blocks for the Wildcats, while Benedict had 18 points and three assists. NU's Kennedy Harrah had nine points and Davis seven rebounds.

∎ Cardington followed up the North Union loss with a 45-11 win at Ridgedale. Linkous scored 19 and Hardwick eight, while Hannah Cook had six points and Lauren Leslie 10 rebounds for Ridgedale. In a 39-38 loss to Loudonville, Hess had 12 points and Linkous eight.

∎ Ridgedale lost to Vanlue 45-39. Leslie paced the Rockets with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Richelle Gleespen, Cook and Hannah Murphy all had eight points. Benda Scott hauled in nine rebounds with four blocks and three steals for Ridgedale.

∎ Highland led 21-11 at halftime but couldn't hold on in a 50-41 loss to Fredericktown in overtime. Shelby Conley had 12 points for the Scots. Highland was tied with Northridge at halftime and within three points midway through the fourth quarter but lost 41-28 to Northridge. Abby Jordan and Makayla Woods led the Scots with 10 and nine points each. In a 49-16 loss to Granville, Highland managed just one point in the first half, and no one scored more than four points for the game.
