Girls Best of the Week: Pleasant repeats Colt Classic title

BELLVILLE — Pleasant repeated as the champion of the Colt Classic at Little Apple Golf Course, winning the girls golf tournament last week.

The Spartans shot a 310 to take home the top trophy. Winning individually with an even-par 64 was Pleasant's Dina Shah, while right behind her was teammate Maura Murphy who fired a 66. Maddie Murphy and Anna Songer both shot 90 for Pleasant.

Highland was fourth at the 13-team event that featured 62 golfers. CeCi Grassbaugh was fourth overall with a 72, while Mallory Jones and Guinevere Jackson both made the top 25.

Pleasant also beat Highland 169-198 at Wyandot Golf Course with Grassbaugh shooting 41 and Jones 44 for the Scots. In a 210-243 Highland win over Fredericktown at Vernon View, Grassbaugh had a 44 and Jones a 49,

Here are some other highlights over the last week with the area's high school girls athletes and fall sports teams:

∎ Pleasant tennis knocked off River Valley 4-1. Winning for the Spartans were Maura Murphy, Katie Jordan and Hannah Miller in singles and Anna Wenig and Lauren West in second doubles. Macyn Danals and Addison Comstock won in first doubles for RV.

∎ Marion Harding topped Upper Sandusky 4-1 in tennis. Taryn Simmers, Audrey Feasel and Sierra Silverio all won in two sets, while Jayde Pineda and Autumn Silverio won first doubles 5-7, 6-2, 6-1. In a 4-1 loss to Shelby, Harding's lone point came from Simmers in first singles, beating Anne Mahek 6-2, 6-1. The Presidents also defeated Westerville North 3-2. Simmers and Feasel won their matches 6-0, 6-0 and Sierra Silverio won her match 6-0, 6-1.

∎ River Valley topped Kenton 4-1 in tennis with Gabby Cametti, Shayla Pappert, Danals/Comstock and Rose Linville/Amelia Young all scoring points

∎ River Valley soccer went to Saunders Park in Columbus and dominated Cristo Rey 7-0. Makyha Rodgers scored a hat trick, and Halle Snyder posted two goals and two assists, while Gracyn Borders and Gabby Riegel also scored goals. Lila Mencer, Borders, Selah Parkman and Delaney Myers all handed out assists.

The Vikings returned home to blank Pleasant 4-0 as Kaya Brown recorded her second straight shutout and her third of the season in goal. Rodgers scored twice as did Snyder with an assist. Gianna Alves and Parkman added assists. RV's midfielders were cited for controlling the game, while the defense helped start the Vikings' attack, according to coach Justin Hage.

∎ Highland soccer was down 2-0 with 20 minutes left during a match with Marion Harding, but the Scots rallied for a 3-2 victory. Bryn Orr got Highland on the board off a pass from Izzy Arnett-Tomasek, then knotted it with 10 minutes left from an Amarie Morgan assist. With one minute left, Cami Hilton booted the decider off an Orr pass. For Harding, Taylor Iden scored both goals, and Shelby Stimson had an assist, while Lexie Davis recorded 15 saves.

∎ Iden scored four goals with an assist in a 5-4 victory over North Union. Gabby Hittle had the other goal, while Ivy Russell had two assists for the Presidents. For the Wildcats, Abbey Price scored three times and Leah Mattlack scored once.

∎ Ridgedale went 2-1 at the Crestline Volleyball Invitational, beating St. Peter's and the hosts and losing to Ashland. Mya Brown and Richelle Gleespen combined for seven aces against St. Peter's. Gleespen served three aces, and Lauren Lesie had three blocks against Ashland. Gleespen and Mylee Mullins teamed for 12 points against Crestline.

The Rockets fell 3-0 to Temple Christian in Northwest Central Conference play. Brown and Hannah Cook dug up nine shots each, and Grace Staton put down five blocks for Ridgedale.

The Rockets hosted the Ridgedale Invitational over the weekend and finished second behind East Knox. In a 2-0 win over Mount Gilead, Leslie had 16 digs and eight kills, Brown nine points and Mullins four blocks. In the 2-1 championship loss, Cook put up 21 assists and eight digs, Leslie 17 digs and seven kills and Staton 15 digs, 10 kills and eight points.

∎ The Presidents got their first volleyball win of the season, stopping Groveport Madison 3-0. Emily Ratliff and Jaela Woods combined for 18 kills for Harding, while Nyla Sharp-Holmes had eight digs and Macie Cameron two aces.

∎ Highland got by River Valley 3-1 in volleyball. Kameron Stover led the Scots with 26 kills, while Brooke Schott had 11 kills, and Larsen Terrill had 42 assists, 10 kills and three aces. Zoya Winkelfoos added 10 kills and three aces for the Scots, and Camryn Miller served three aces. For RV, Morgan Nemeth set 82 of 83 for 21 assists, and Haleigh Creps hit 45 of 55 for 18 kills, while Eden Osborne served 20 of 20 and had 20 digs.

The next day the Vikings played an epic with Galion, as the Tigers won 25-21, 25-22, 21-25, 21-25, 15-13. Creps was nearly unstoppable at the net with 38 kills and eight blocks on 74 of 82 hitting. Janelle Hoback was 45 of 48 in serve receiving, adding 15 digs and 10 kills for RV. Nemeth produced 55 assists and Reagan Hummel four aces.

River Valley finished third at the Circleville Invitational over the weekend.

∎ Highland knocked off Clear Fork 3-0 with Stover getting 18 kills and three aces, Terrill 29 assists and six kills, Schott seven kills and three blocks and Miller 11 digs.

The Scots competed at a seven-team tournament at Worthington Kilborne and made it to the finals before losing their first match of the season 2-0 to 11-2 Dublin Jerome. In that match, the Scots (13-1) got four aces from Schott and seven kills from Stover. During a 2-1 win over the hosts, Stover posted 19 kills and three blocks, Terrill 38 assists, Schott nine kills and Mia Stanco eight kills. Highland won the opener 2-0 over Grove City with Stover having nine kills and three aces, Winkelfoos four aces and Terrill 24 assists.

∎ North Union got 15 assists and 17 digs from Cagney Stewart, 12 kills from Sienna Ballinger and four aces from Zoe Wedding in a 3-1 victory over Northwester. In North Union's 3-0 loss to Benjamin Logan, Wedding put up 11 digs and 13 assists. The Wildcats lost 3-2 to Marysville with leaders being Ballinger with 16 kills, Stewart with fives assists and 23 assists, Abi Zimmerman with three blocks, Wedding with 19 digs and Hope Hall with 20 serve receptions.

∎ Cardington fell 3-2 to Colonel Crawford with Audrey Brininger getting 24 kills. In a 3-0 win over Centerburg to take over first place alone in the Knox Morrow Athletic Conference, Brininger had 16 kills and Alexis Crone nine kills and three solo blocks.

∎ In a 3-0 loss to Galion, Pleasant's Emerson Williams had 14 assists and Maddie Aurigemma eight kills. The Spartans bounced back for a quick 3-0 win at Marion Harding. Lexi Olt led Pleasant with 10 kills, while Kenzley Davis served 19 points, Sydney Smith 18 points and Kenna Ambrose 11 points.

∎ North Union cross country was 17th at the Central Ohio Cross Country Invitational as Kendal Music was 60th in 21:43, Savannah Amstutz 64th in 21:50 and Lauren Hall 68th in 21:53.

∎ Mount Gilead competed at the Boardman Spartan Cross Country Invitational and took ninth out of 24 teams in the Division III race. Scoring for the Indians were Kimberly Staley (26th, 22:50), Haley Pfeifer (43rd, 23:30), Danielle Pohlkotte (70th, 24:45), Karley Wallace (72nd, 24:48) and Madilyn Elson (92nd, 25:39).

∎ Marion Harding ran at the Galion Cross Country Festival and finished seventh in the eight-team Division I race. Lydia Price was 34th in 23:22, Leah Price 37th in 23:38 and Kamryn McDonald 38th in 23:44 for the Presidents.

∎ In the 15-team Division II race at Galion, Highland was 10th and River Valley 13th. For Highland, Lauren Garber was 24th in 21:15 and followed by Kindylle Mallow (51st, 23:04), Shelby Conley (57th, 23:39), Riley Matthews (61st, 24:09) and Morgan Snider (73rd, 25:03). Leading RV was Erica Mason (71st, 24:57) and Katie Garrison (80th, 25:35).

∎ Northmor took ninth out of 17 teams in Galion. Kate Lehman was 13th in 20:37 for the Golden Knights, Natalie Hunter 17th in 21:04, Ryann Brinkman 61st in 23:12 and Hannah Kanagy 78th in 24:25.

∎ Cardington also ran in the Division III race with Loey Hallabrin ending 15th in 20:43, Morgan White 37th in 22:13, Magi Hallabrin 56th in 23:00 and Gracie Meade 57th in 23:00.

∎ Pleasant's Casey Kimball was 18th in the D-III Galion race, clocking 21:05. Kalyn Kimball was 57th in 22:47 and Whitley Baumgartner 73rd in 24:09. In the same race, Gilead Christian's Allyson Green was 58th in 23:05.
