Girls Best of the Week: Pleasant tennis brings home hardware

MARION — Pleasant’s girls tennis team brought home lots of hardware this weekend. The Spartans finished second behind Shelby at the seven-team Bucyrus Invitational.

Hannah Miller won the third singles bracket, while Katie Jordan was runner-up in second singles, and Maura Murphy was third in first singles. Anna Wenig and Lauren West were runners-up in second doubles.

Also in area tennis, River Valley’s Gabby Cametti won a pair of matches in third singles against Lexington and Galion. She was the lone point in a 4-1 loss to Lady Lex, while the Vikings topped Galion 4-1. Other RV winners were Shayla Pappert in second singles, Macyn Danals/Addison Comstock in first doubles and Rose Linville/Amerlia Young in second doubles.

Marion Harding blanked Galion 5-0 in tennis as Taryn Simmers, Audrey Feasel and Sierra Silverio in singles and Jayde Pineda/Autumn Silverio in first doubles and Raina Smith/Sophie Beechum all were easy winners in two sets.

Here are some other highlights from around the area in girls sports from last week:

  • Pleasant’s volleyball team bounced back from a 3-1 gym-opening loss against Ontario on Thursday to beat Northmor 3-2 in sets of 25-20, 27-25, 17-25, 24-26, 15-10 Saturday. Lexi Olt paced the Spartans with 16 kills and 10 points, while Maddie Aurigemma had 13 kills, Kenzley Davis 10 kills and Emerson Williams 24 assists. Earlier in the week, Pleasant got by Clear Fork 3-0 with Olt and Aurigemma combining for 18 kills, Kenna Ambrose adding eight kills and Williams getting 25 assists.

  • River Valley volleyball defeated Marion Harding 3-0 as Janelle Hoback was 15-for-15 serving and had 11 kills, Morgan Nemeth served two aces and added 36 assists and Haleigh Creps put down 21 kills. For Harding, Taylor Myers had 17 assists, Jaela Woods eight kills, Jada Adams 15 digs and Nyla Sharp-Holmes 14 digs.

  • Highland, ranked No. 6 in Division II statewide, stopped Shelby 3-0. Larsen Terrill had 30 assists and six kills, Kameron Stover 15 kills and three aces and Zoya Winkelfoos eight kills and three aces. Then in a meeting of Mid Ohio Athletic Conference unbeatens, the Scots prevailed 25-21, 27-25, 26-24 against Galion. Terrill had 28 assists, 10 kills and 17 digs, Stover 18 kills and 17 digs, Winkelfoos eight kills and 17 digs, Camryn Miller 17 digs, and Brooke Schott and Mia Stanco seven kills each.

  • Zoe Wedding had 17 digs and eight assists in a 3-0 North Union loss to Indian Lake. The Wildcats bounced back for a 3-0 win over Urbana with Wedding getting 18 assists, Sienna Ballinger 11 kills and Hope Hall three aces and 13 digs.Cardington had its best serving match of the season in blanking East Knox 3-0, winning the second set 25-7.In golf, Highland fell to Centerburg 192-201 at Wyandot Golf Course. CeCi Grassbaugh had a 40 for medalist honors and Mallory Jones was third with a 47 for the Scots.

  • In soccer, Marion Harding knocked off Whetstone 7-2. Taylor Iden scored five goals with an assist for the Presidents, while Ivy Russell had a goal and three assists, Paris Jaimes a goal and assist and Ruby Williams an assist. In an 8-0 loss to Shelby, Lexie Davis had 13 saves and Shelby Stimson 12 saves for the Prexies.

  • Cardington cross country’s Loey Hallabrin finished sixth in 20:07 at the Stars, Stripes and Lights Invitational at Seneca East, competing against 213 other runners in the Division III race. Morgan White was 26th in 21:28.

  • Mount Gilead was fourth as a team in the D-III race at Seneca East. Haley Pfeifer and Kimberly Staley were 21st and 22nd in 21:13 and 21:15 to lead the Indians.

  • Highland was fourth in the D-II race at Seneca East with four runners in the top 50. Lauren Garber was seventh in 20:46, Kindylle Mallow 19th in 22:16, Shelby Conley 31st in 22:55 and Riley Matthews 41st in 23:36.

  • Northmor won the Wynford Invitational with 60 points. Finishing third in 20:31 was Kate Lehman, and finishing fifth in 21:12 was Natalie Hunter. Other runners for the Golden Knights were Ryann Brinkman (16th, 22:58), Maizy Brinkman (21st, 23:31), Hannah Kanagy (31st, 24:48), Lyla Bishop (35th, 25:14) and Shelby Cooper (40th, 25:54).

  • Pleasant also competed at Wynford with Casey Kimball getting fourth in 20:41, Kalyn Kimball ninth in 21:44, Whitney Baumgartner 22nd in 23:36 and Olivia Meyers 47th in 27:03.

  • North Union was 11th as a team at the McGowan Invitational at Watkins Memorial. Lauren hall was 32nd in 22:21, Kendal Music 40th in 22:40 and Savanna Amstutz 49th in 22:57.

  • Harding was sixth at the FarmBanks Invitational at Fairbanks. Lydia Price was 14th in 22:16, Leah Price 17th in 22:36 and Kamryn McDonald 25th in 23:55 for the Presidents.
