Girls Best of the Week: Simmers, Miller take MOAC titles
LEXINGTON — Marion Harding's Taryn Simmers and Pleasant's Hannah Miller won championships at the Mid Ohio Athletic Conference Girls Tennis Tournament held at Lakewood Racquet Club in Lexington over the weekend.
Simmers took the title in first singles, while Miller was the champ of the third-singles bracket.
Pleasant's Maura Murphy and Katie Jordan were both third-place finishers in first and third singles. The doubles matches were held Thursday at Lakewood.
No other details were available.
Here are some other highlights from around the area last week with girls high school sports teams and athletes:
∎ Earlier in the week, Harding topped Pleasant in a girls tennis match that was played over two days due to rain. Pleasant's lone win came from Jordan as she beat Audrey Feasel 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
For the Presidents, Simmers topped Murphy 6-2, 6-1; Sierra Silverio edged Miller 0-6, 6-4, 6-2; Jayde Pineda and Autumn Silverio downed Bailey Leslie and Kylie Klaiber 6-2, 6-1; and Raina Smith and Sophie Beechum nipped Lauren West and Anna Wenig 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.
∎ Eight area cross country teams competed at the Denny Stevens Invitational at Kokosing Dam in Fredericktown as 16 teams and 180 runners filled the field. Tops among the locals was Northmor finishing sixth as Katie Lehman ran a 19:34 for fourth and was followed in scoring for the Golden Knights by Natalie Hunter's 16th in 20:20, Ryann Brinkman's 20th in 20:31, Layla Bishop's 70th in 22:49 and Maizy Brinkman's 84th in 23:28.
Highland was ninth with Lauren Gerber (19th, 20:29), Kindylie Mallow (31st, 21:19), Shelby Conley (55th, 22:19), Riley Matthews (69th, 22:47) and Abbie Pruett (85th, 23:32) scoring for the Scots, while Mount Gilead was 10th with Haley Pfeifer (22nd, 20:34), Kimberly Staley (24th, 20:43), Karley Wallace (63rd, 22:37), Danielle Pohlkotte (72nd, 22:55) and Madilyn Elson (80th, 23:13) scoring for the Indians.
River Valley was 13th as Allie Valentine (61st, 22:36), Morgan Elliott (90th, 23:41), Erica Mason (94th, 23:45), Brooklynn De Souza (98th, 23:50) and Addi Ebert (99th, 23:51) scored points.
Others running from Marion County were Pleasant's Casey Kimball (12th, 20:12), Kalyn Kimball (38th, 21:38), Whitley Baumgartner (81st, 23:16) and Olivia Meyers (131st, 25:36); Marion Harding's Kamryn McDonald (75th, 23:00), Freeara Coleman (144th, 26:45), Kyleigh Young (164th, 27:54) and Hope Wheeler (176th, 21:33); Ridgedale's Hannah Staton (151st, 26:58) and Chloe Lust (169th, 30:35); and Elgin's Kendal Akers (153rd, 27:05).
∎ Marion Harding finished fourth at the North Union Invitational on Saturday as Lydia Price took seventh in 20:47 and Leah Price took 10th in 21:08. Also running for the Presidents were McDonald (20th, 22:39), Brooklyn Schultz (39th, 25:10), Coleman (45th, 25:44), Young (54th, 27:21) and Wheeler (62nd, 30:27).
The hosts were sixth with Kendal Music going sixth in 20:43, Lauren Hall going 11th in 21:15, Savannah Amstutz going 18th in 22:26, Corajayne DeBoer going 44th in 25:40 and Aunna Kasler going 51st in 26:40.
Pleasant also competed with Casey Kimball running third in 19:47, Kalyn Kimball running eighth in 21:04, Whitley Baumgartner running 21st in 23:27, Olivia Meyers running 31st in 24:24. Akers ran for Elgin, going in 25:59 for 49th.
∎ Cardington's Loey Hallabrin ran a season-best 19:48 to end in sixth in the Division II-III race at an invitational in Pickerington. Magi Hallabrin was 33rd in 21:18 which was her best time of the season, while Morgan White was 59th in 22:28, and Gracie Meade was 80th in 23:19.
∎ Mount Gilead competed at the Centerville Saturday Night Lights and was 21st out of 32 teams and 279 runners in the Varsity A race. Staley ran a 20:43 for 34th to crack the top 50.
∎ North Union ran at the Triad Invitational during the week and Music was ninth in 22:06, Hall 11th in 22:49 and Amstutz 12th in 22:51.
∎ Taylor Iden had a hat trick and Shelby Stimson added two goals in Harding's 5-3 win over Galion in soccer. Ivy Russell assisted on three goals.
∎ River Valley volleyball topped Marion Harding 3-0 with Haleigh Creps scoring 25 kills, Janelle Hoback going 15 of 16 in serve receptions, Eden Osborne serving 21 of 22 for four aces, and Reagan Hummel serving 18 of 20 for a pair of aces.
∎ Ridgedale topped Upper Scioto Valley 3-1 in volleyball as Grace Staton led with 17 kills, 11 digs and four blocks, while Lauren Leslie had 15 kills, 18 digs and two aces, and Hannah Cook added 38 assists and 11 digs. In a 3-0 loss to Shekinah Christian, Leslie dug up 10, plus was 15 of 16 serving and 14 of 15 in serve receptions, while Mylee Mullins blocked four.
Ridgedale also competed at the Ridgemont Invitational. The Rockets beat Elgin with Staton finishing with 13 points, six aces, nine kills and eight digs, Leslie getting eight kills and 10 digs and Cook handing out 19 assists. In a loss to Perry, Staton led with 14 digs and six kills and Cook had 10 assists. In a loss to USV, Leslie ended with 16 digs, Cook with 23 assists and Staton with 14 kills and six blocks.
∎ Pleasant blanked Clear Fork 3-0 in volleyball. Lexi Olt paced the Spartans with 14 kills and two aces followed by seven kills from Maddie Aurigemma, 22 assists from Emerson Williams and five aces from Madi Pendleton.
