Girls golf: Brighton repeats as champion in loaded Lober Classic

Brighton took on some of the best girls golf teams in the state to open its season and repeated as the champion of the Lober Classic at Crystal Mountain.

The Bulldogs followed up their first-round score of 340 with a 332, beating Rockford by four strokes for first place in the 27-team event. Troy Athens was third with a 700.

Each of the top three teams placed in the top eight in the state Division 1 tournament last season and returned all their scoring golfers.

In addition, three of the next four teams cracked the top four in smaller divisions in last year’s state tournament, while sixth-place Traverse City Central was 11th in Division 1.

Junior Maddy Martens was Brighton’s top golfer, following a first-round 84 with a 76 to finish fifth out of 150 golfers.

Junior Lauren Forcier tied for eighth by shooting 83-84-167, junior Abbie Pietila was 10th (85-85-170) and senior Amelia Gatti was 20th (88-91-179).

Olivia Hemmila of Troy Athens was the medalist, shooting 72-74-146.

Royal/Gold Tournament

Howell finished eighth out of 12 teams with a 424 at Hudson Mills Metropark. Ann Arbor Pioneer won with a score of 337.

Jillian Smith was 28th out of 61 golfers with a 101 to lead Howell. Plymouth’s Brooke Morris was the medalist with a 75.

Temperance Bedford 196, Pinckney 211

Pinckney junior Alivia Ligrow was the medalist by six strokes with a 40. Kenzie Christopher took sixth with a 52 for the Pirates.
