Girls golf: Sofia Nogalo sitting atop Section 1 Championship leaderboard again

Sofia Nogalo knows the drill.

The defending champion is again sitting atop the leaderboard after shooting a 3-under 69 in the opening round of the Section 1 championship Monday at Spook Rock Golf Course. She rolled in five birdies to offset two bogeys. The Ursuline junior avoided big numbers and has a four shot advantage heading into the final round Wednesday at the Whippoorwill Club.

Scarsdale's Emma Lee is in second, followed by Ursuline's Nino Choe and Bronxville's Molly Stoltz, who are five back.

Only the top 20 finishers move on to the final round. There will be nine spots in next month's NYSPHSAA championship available on Wednesday.

Ursuline edged defending champion Scarsdale by seven strokes to win the team championship. Nogalo along with Nina Choe, Julia Kret, Sarah Brannigan and Anna Brody combined for a 300 aggregate. They will play for a state title June 4-5 at McGregor Links Country Club in upstate Wilton.
