Girls hoops: Orcutt Academy, Nipomo and Santa Maria notch wins

May 1—Orcutt Academy's girls basketball team overcame a 14-2 deficit at the end of the first quarter to beat Mission Prep 42-36 in a Mountain League game on Friday.

Orcutt Academy senior Erynn Padhal had a big game with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Giselle Calderon had another one of her all-around performances, recording 10 points, five assists and five steals. Devyn Kendrick added 10 points, nine rebounds and four steals.

Sophomore Khaeli Robertson had 11 rebounds and five steals.

The Spartans are 5-1 overall and 5-1 in the Mountain League, proving they can compete in the area's toughest league, though there are bigger challenges ahead. The Spartans have two games against defending champ Righetti next week, on Thursday and Friday.

Righetti is 4-1 on the season after suffering its first loss Friday at Arroyo Grande. The Spartans close out the regular season against Arroyo Grande as it appears Righetti, Arroyo Grande, Orcutt Academy and Nipomo are the Mountain League's top teams.

Nipomo and Orcutt Academy split their two-game sets as did Arroyo Grande and Nipomo and Arroyo Grande and Righetti.

Nipomo 73, Santa Ynez 48

The Titans won a non-league game on Friday as junior Kacie Slover scored 30 points on the road.

The Titans are now 3-2 overall and 2-2 in league.

Honnalee Kennedy added 13 points for Nipomo. Kayden Sanders had 12 and Kat Anderson chipped in nine.

Nipomo has league series against San Luis Obispo, Righetti, St. Joseph and Mission Prep left on the schedule.

Santa Maria 47, Templeton 40

The Saints stayed unbeaten and moved their season record to 6-0 with a road win at Templeton.

Carlissa Solorio had another double-double with 16 points and 16 rebounds for the Saints.

Luz Olea added 11 points and and Iceis McNutt had 10 points and seven rebounds while coach Erik Ramos said she took four critical charges to help the Saints win.

Boys basketball

Chatsworth Sierra Canyon 72, St. Joseph 59

The Knights suffered their first loss of the season, dropping to 11-1, with a loss at national power Sierra Canyon on Saturday.

St. Joseph junior Dre Roman had 22 points for the Knights.

Sierra Canyon's Amari Bailey had 28 points and Shy Odom added 20.

Bailey is a consensus five-star recruit who has committed to UCLA. He's a top-five national recruit by every major recruiting service.

Nipomo 88, Templeton 75

Daren Sosa hit four 3-pointers and finished with 24 points in the Titans' win over Templeton Friday night.

The Titans are 5-1 on the season and have a two-game set against San Luis Obispo on Thursday and Friday.

Nate Reese added 19 and Gianni Hart chipped in 14.

Templeton was led by Josh Kaiser (16), Grant VandeHoeff (14) and Nate Mututwa 12.

Softball

Knights split doubleheader

Morro Bay won the opener 11-10 before the Knights dominated the closing game 12-4 Saturday.

Briana Munoz pitched both games for the Knights. She threw a complete game in the second one to earn the win, allowing four runs and also drove in three runs.

CharliRay Escobedo had four RBIs in that game and three hits. Desirae Rodriguez had three hits, three runs and an RBI in the 12-4 win.

In the 11-10 loss, the Knights out-hit the Pirates 16 to 10. But they committed six errors as Morro Bay had five.

Munoz threw a complete game in that one as well, striking out five but giving up two homers.

Kaylee Dolores had three hits, a run and an RBI in that game. Munoz had three hits and two RBIs. Escobedo added two hits in the first game and a run and Desirae Marroquin had two hits, two runs and two RBIs. Lita Mahoney also had two hits and scored twice. Lizzette Carlos had two RBIs and two hits.

Danya Boyd had six RBIs for the Pirates in the first game.

Morro Bay is now 11-5 on the season and 8-2 in the Ocean League. St. Joseph is 15-5 and 7-1 in league.

Nipomo 15, Orcutt Academy 3

Nipomo's Key-annah Pu'a went 2-for-4 with a HR at the plate and struck out 10 batters in the circle as the Titans won handily.

For Orcutt, Danica Black had a triple and scored twice with two hits. Reign Barretto had the third Orcutt hit.
