Girls Region Hoops: Arlington, Castlewood win & lots of schedule changes

Out of the six area Class A and B girls basketball region tournaments, only Region 2B was able to beat the winter storm on Tuesday to get games played.

Four quarterfinal games were played in Region 2B, including two at Arlington.

Top-seeded Wolsey-Wessington (19-2) handled eighth-seeded Iroquois-Lake Preston (7-15) 61-26 at Wolsey and fifth-seeded James Valley Christian (15-6) beat fourth-seeded Deubrook Area (15-5) in a game played in White. At Arlington, second-seeded Arlington (17-4) downed No. 7 Oldham-Ramona-Rutland (7-14) 83-38 and third-seeded Castlewood (14-7) turned back sixth-seeded De Smet (9-12).

Arlington cruised to victory with 27 points and four assists from Addalyn Steffensen; 18 points, six rebounds and four assists from Jaelyn Huntimer; 14 points, seven rebounds, four assists and five steals from Harley Johnson; and seven points from Isabelle Steffensen.

Julia Trygstad paced ORR with 20 points and seven rebounds. Alivia Bickett added seven points and Paige Hanson seven rebounds.

Castlewood moved on with 22 points, nine rebounds and four steals from Maddie Horn. Mackenzie Everson contributed 18 points, Lyndsey Archer 11 points and Presley Knecht 11 points and seven rebounds.

De Smet received 15 points and seven rebounds from Hazel Luethmers, 13 points and six rebounds from Jada Burke; and nine points from Alyssa Asleson.

Mallory Miller tallied 21 points, Leah Williams and Mya Boomsma each 12 and Taylor Horn eight for second-rated Wolsey-Wessington. Becca Bich scored eight points, Anna Decker seven and Hadlee Holt six for ILP.

Kaylie Robinson's 22 points, 11 rebounds and five steals led the way for JVC, which also got 17 points from Alexa Goertz and seven rebounds from Abby Hasart. Deubrook Area got 12 points from Kadence Bowne, nine from Ellie Koenig and eight from Skyla Petersen.

The tourney's semifinal games are tentatively scheduled for Thursday in the Huron Arena. James Valley faces Wolsey-Wessington and Arlington meets Castlewood. Official times have not been posted. Thursday's winners advance to SoDak 16 state-qualifying games on Thursday, March 2.

All other region games on Tuesday were postponed or had already been rescheduled. Here was the updated schedule plans as of Tuesday night:

Region 1A

Tourney moved to Saturday and Monday. Games Saturday include No. 4 Aberdeen Roncalli (10-9) vs. No. 5 Redfield (10-10) at 1 p.m. and No. 8 Tiospa Zina (5-14) vs. No. 1 Sisseton (17-2) at 2:30 p.m. in games at Sisseton; and No. 2 Milbank (12-7) vs. No. 7 Webster Area (7-12) at 1 p.m. and No. 3 Groton Area (12-8) vs. No. 6 Waubay-Summit (9-10) at 2:30 p.m. in Milbank. The winners meet in the semifinals on Monday.

Region 2A

Games postponed Tuesday included No. 8 Estelline-Hendricks (9-11) at No. 1 Hamlin (19-0), No. 5 Elkton-Lake Benton (12-8) at No. 4 Sioux Valley (13-7), No. 7 Clark-Willow Lake (7-12) at No. 2 Florence-Henry (16-2) and No. 6 Great Plains Lutheran (10-10) at No. 3 Flandreau (16-4). It was reported that the Flandreau-Great Plains game has been rescheduled for Saturday. No other official announcements were released on the other games.

Region 6A

Tuesday's games were postponed to Thursday including No. 5 North Central (10-10) vs. No. 4 Crow Creek (10-10) at 6 p.m. and No. 8 Cheyenne-Eagle Butte (2-18) vs. No. 1 Miller (16-4) at 7:30 p.m. in Miller; and No. 6 Stanley County (6-14) vs. No. 3 Dupree (15-5) at 6 p.m. and No. 7 McLaughlin (5-15) vs. No. Mobridge-Pollock (14-6) at 7:30 p.m. in Mobridge. No information was available on the schedule for the semifinal games.

Region 1B

The No. 9 Waverly-South Shore (0-20) at No. 8 Langford Area (3-16) game on Monday has been pushed back to Friday at 7 p.m. with Tuesday's games being pushed back to Saturday including: WSS/Langford Area winner at No. 1 Warner (14-6), TBD; No. 5 Britton-Hecla (5-14) at No. 4 Hitchcock-Tulare (7-13) at 7 p.m. in Tulare; No. 7 Aberdeen Christian (2-18) at No. 2 Leola-Frederick Area (14-6), 7 p.m.; and No. 6 Wilmot (5-14) at No. 3 Northwestern (12-7), 7 p.m. The semifinals are now scheduled for Monday.

Region 6B

Quarterfinal games between No. 8 Ipswich (6-15) at No. 1 Sully Buttes (17-3) and No. 5 Lower Brule (10-9) at No. 4 Herreid-Selby Area (10-10) have been tentatively pushed back to 6 p.m. Thursday in Onida and Herreid, respectively. Plan B is to push the games back to Friday (Ipswich-Sully Buttes at 5 p.m. and Lower Brule-HSA at 6 p.m.).

The semifinal game between No. 3 Lyman (13-7) at No. 2 Potter County (14-7) has been pushed back to Thursday at 6 p.m. Plan B is Friday at 6 p.m. and Plan C Saturday at 2 p.m. The winner of the Ipswich-Sully Buttes and Lower Brule-HSA games are scheduled to play either Friday at 7:30 p.m. or Saturday at a time to be determined.

Other Basketball Games

The Aberdeen Central at Sioux Falls Roosevelt boys and Sioux Falls Roosevelt at Aberdeen Central girls' games were postponed on Tuesday. They have been rescheduled for Monday.
