Girls soccer: What lies ahead for local Section 1, 9 teams in NYSPHSAA Final Four?

The stage is set for the NYSPHSAA Final Four to kick off in Cortland this weekend. Here's a quick look at what lies ahead for local Section 1 and 9 teams that hope to go all the way.

Class AA

Monroe-Woodbury Crusaders (18-2-1) vs. Ward Melville Patriots (15-0-3) 

When: Saturday, 3 p.m.

Where: Tompkins Cortland Community College

Streaks: Section 9’s Monroe-Woodbury is undefeated in 10 straight games, which includes a tie. Ward Melville has won 10 in a row, dating back to Sept. 21.

NYSSWA rankings: Section 11's Ward Melville is ranked third. Monroe-Woodbury is No. 4.

Road to states: Monroe-Woodbury beat Pine Bush (6-0), Valley Central (2-0), Arlington (4-1), Corning-Painted Post (6-1). Ward Melville topped West Islip (3-1), Smithtown West (5-4), Commack (2-1) and Massapequa (3-1) in the Long Island championship to reach its first state semifinal.

Section 9 title: Monroe-Woodbury takes care of business in title repeat

Regional semis: Monroe-Woodbury defeats Arlington in state tournament rematch

Regional final: Monroe-Woodbury strikes early, cruises past Corning

Class A

Albertus Magnus (20-1) vs. MacArthur (14-0-2)

When: Saturday, 10 a.m.

Where: Tompkins Cortland Community College

Streaks: Albertus Magnus lost, 1-0, in overtime to New Jersey-based Immaculate Heart Academy, but outside of that, the Falcons are undefeated against New York competition and have yet to give up a single goal to any in-state opposition. MacArthur is unbeaten, a streak that includes shutouts in their last six games.

NYSSWA rankings: Albertus Magnus is ranked No. 2, while MacArthur checks in at No. 3.

Road to states: Albertus Magnus defeated Nanuet (4-0), Hen Hud (4-0), Pearl River (1-0), Clarkstown North (1-0), Goshen (6-0), and Vestal (4-0) to make its first state final four since moving up to Class A in 2018. As for MacArthur, it defeated Wantagh (1-0), Plainedge (1-0), Garden City (2-0), then Shoreham-Wading River (1-0) in the Long Island championship to reach Cortland.

Section 1 Class A: Albertus Magnus finds redemption in title win over Clarkstown North

Regional semis: Albertus Magnus blitzes Goshen in 6-0 regional semifinal win

Regional finals: Falcons' supreme run continues with win over Vestal

Class B

Irvington (18-4) vs. Seaford (14-1-1)

When: Saturday, 3 p.m.

Where: Cortland High School

Streaks: Irvington has a six-game winning streak, but it is undefeated against Class B opponents this season. Seaford enters with a three-game winning streak.

NYSSWA rankings: Seaford is ranked third, while Irvington is right behind at No. 4.

Road to states: Irvington defeated Dobbs Ferry (8-0), Blind Brook (5-0), Pleasantville (2-0), Edgemont (3-1), Lourdes (1-0) and Chenango Valley (5-0) in its playoff run to the Bulldogs' first-ever state final four. As for Seaford, it defeated Locust Valley (2-1), Wheatley (1-0), and Babylon (1-0) in the Long Island championship.

Irvington: Bulldogs defeat Edgemont, 3-1, to claim first Section 1 Class B title since 2006

Regional semis: Rosenblatt's golden goal lifts Irvington to first Class B state regional final

Regional finals: Chenango Valley no match for Irvington

Class C

Millbrook Blazers (14-2) vs. Waterford-Halfmoon Fordians (20-1) 

When: Saturday, 10 a.m.

Where: Cortland High School

Streaks: Section 9’s Millbrook has won 11 in a row. Waterford-Halfmoon has won five straight.

NYSSWA rankings: Section 2's Waterford-Halfmoon is ranked No. 1. Millbrook is sixth.

Road to states: Millbrook beat S.S. Seward (3-1), Tri-Valley (8-1), Haldane (4-0). Waterford-Halfmoon beat Berne-Knox-Westerlo (9-0), Oppenheim-Ephratah/St. Johnsville (9-0), Voorheesville (7-1), Northeastern Clinton (1-0).

Section 9 title: Millbrook takes down top-seeded Tri-Valley for section title

Regional final: Millbrook defeats Haldane to reach first state final four

Class D

Mount Academy (17-1) vs. Chazy (16-2-2)

When: Saturday, 10 a.m.

Where: Homer High School

Streaks: Mount Academy has won each of its last two games. Its lone loss came to Section 9 Class B champ Lourdes in the MHAL finals on Oct. 21, but the Eagles have won every other game. Chazy is unbeaten in its last 14 games, a stretch that includes two draws. Its last loss came on Sept. 15.

NYSSWA rankings: Mount Academy, the defending Class D state champ, is the top-ranked team in the state. Chazy enters at No. 5 in NYSSWA's latest Class D rankings.

Road to states: Mount Academy defeated Eldred, 7-0, in the Section 9 final, then took down Northville, 5-0, in regional final. Section 7's Chazy defeated Keene Central (4-1), Boquet Valley (2-1), then downed Chateaugay in a decisive penalty kick shootout to punch its ticket to states.

Playmakers: Hilda Huleatt, Alanna Maendel

Stoppers: Alison Rimes

Keeper: Corah Boller
