Girls tennis roundup: NLS' top players help secure win over Hutchinson

Sep. 14—NEW LONDON — New London-Spicer eked out victories in the top three singles positions and at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles to earn the Wright County Conference girls tennis victory over Hutchinson at New London.

"The team earned a hard-fought win," NLS head coach Chad Schmiesing said. "We had another phenomenal night with (the) weather."(No. 2 singles player) Amyra Gamez played probably the best match I have seen her play. She moved well and drove her forehand to control points. (No. 3 singles player) Ella Weiland continues to impress me. She is such a worker and perhaps the most patient player I have ever coached. (No. 1 singles player) Mya Mayhew also got a singles win tonight. Mya has been moving so well and that has been her strength all season. She did a great job of staying composed and mentally tough to earn a win."

Willmar is still looking for its first Central Lakes Conference win after a loss to the St. Cloud Crush at St. Cloud.

The Cardinals' Jenna Hisken forced an extended second set with St. Cloud's Emma Parries before Parries came away with a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 4 singles.

Willmar is back on the road Thursday against Brainerd.

At No. 3 singles, LQPV/D-B's Hannah Oie came back from a second-set loss to defeat Kya Oakes, 6-0, 5-7, 6-0.

The Braves also had a four-set win. Playing at No. 4 singles, Molly Jones defeated LQPV/D-B's Sadie Hacker, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.

MACCRAY earned points at Nos. 1, 3 and 4 singles and Nos. 1 and 3 doubles to beat Sauk Centre at Clara City.

All seven matches were in straight sets. At No. 2 singles, Hannah Delong of MACCRAY beat the Mainstreeters' Emma Klaphake 6-2, 6-1.

The No. 1 doubles team of Malinda Peterson and Alex Dirksen defeated Addy Hoffman and Lydia Peterson 6-2, 6-4.
