Girls wrestling team breaking barriers

CHANUTE, Kan. — Two Chanute High School girls say they hope their success on the wrestling mat sends a strong message to young girls everywhere.

Seniors Reese Clements and Kadynce Axelson are now both members of the “100 career win club” in high school wrestling.

They say when wrestling became a sanctioned sport in Kansas in time for them to start high school, they never thought about being role models. Now, along with winning a second state title, the team’s goal is to show other girls they can be whatever they want to be.

And as for those who would say wrestling is a boy’s sport.

“They say that all the time — usually the boys — and I’m like, ‘ok, let’s go wrestle. I’ll beat you, too,” said Reese Clements, a senior at Chanute High School.

On Wednesday (1/24) Kadynce and Reese both won their matches. For Kadynce, that was win number 102, and Reese is now well over 110 career wins.

The Chanute lady Comets are wrestling this weekend at Sand Springs High School in Oklahoma.
