Giuliani on Learning He’s a Target in Georgia Election Probe: ‘We’re Starting to Live in a Fascist State’

Former Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani suggested Monday that the country is headed toward fascism after he learned from prosecutors that he is a target of the ongoing investigation into the execution of the 2020 presidential election in Georgia.
“It’s just a further desecration of the Sixth Amendment. I was his lawyer of record in that case. The statements that I made are either attorney-client privilege, because they were between me and him, or they were being made on his behalf in order to defend him,” Giuliani said of his relationship with former president Trump.
“When you start turning around lawyers into defendants when they’re defending their clients, we’re starting to live in a fascist state. Look, I’ve already had my law office raided. I never thought I’d ever see that happen,” he said.
Giuliani’s lawyer, Robert Costello, said that Georgia prosecutors originally told New York courts that Giuliani was a material witness whose testimony was crucial to the probe examining “coordinated attempts to unlawfully alter the outcome of the 2020 elections.” On Monday, however, Giuliani’s legal team were informed that the former mayor of New York City is a “target” of the probe.
Last week, Giuliani was ordered to appear to testify Tuesday before Fulton County’s special grand jury, called by District Attorney Fani Willis, investigating Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election.
The subpoena said Giuliani alleged at legislative hearings in Georgia that there had been “widespread voter fraud” in the state’s conduct of the 2020 election. He allegedly presented evidence including a video of “election workers at State Farm Arena in Atlanta that purported to show election workers producing ‘suitcases’ of unlawful ballots from unknown sources, outside the view of election poll watchers.”
The subpoena claims Giuliani continued using the video to push election fraud claims even after Georgia officials had debunked the video.
“There is evidence that the Witness’s appearance and testimony at the hearing was part of a multi-state, coordinated plan by the Trump Campaign to influence the results of the November 2020 election in Georgia and elsewhere,” the subpoena said.
In the subpoena, Giuliani is referred to as “a personal attorney for former President Donald Trump and a lead attorney for the Trump Campaign’s legal efforts seeking to influence the results of the November 2020 election in Georgia and elsewhere.”
The investigation by Willis has produced several other subpoenas as well, including for Senator Lindsey Graham about phone calls he made to Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger about the 2020 election and Trump’s other former legal advisers John Eastman, Cleta Mitchell, Jenna Ellis, and Kenneth Chesebro.
