After the dust settles from Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping each year comes Giving Tuesday, a day designated for giving back to our communities to help people in need.

The day of charitable giving started in 2012 and has grown steadily on social media with #GivingTuesday serving as a call to action to donate money, time, skills and acts of kindness.

The group credits the day for a net-increase in donations nationwide. In 2020 a total of $2.47 billion was donated within a 24-hour period in the U.S. alone.

How you can help

Giving back through The Arizona Republic's Season for Sharing campaign extends your donation further, helping hundreds of Valley nonprofits. For 28 years, the Republic has worked through the Season for Sharing campaign to bring attention to those in great need – and to make a difference.

Last year, 176 organizations benefited from the $2.1 million raised by the campaign. The Republic pays all administrative costs, so 100% of contributions go directly to nonprofits that help struggling children and families, improve educational skills and serve older adults.

Nonprofits that received Season for Sharing grants last year include:

  • East Valley Jewish Community Center received a $7,500 grant to help provide more than 3,500 meals and wellness checks to low-income children, home-bound seniors and disabled adults.

  • Live & Learn received a $7,500 to provide 300 women in need the opportunity to pursue educational and professional opportunities.

  • A New Leaf received a $40,000 grant to provide crisis intervention, safe shelter, basic needs and support services for nearly 17,000 survivors of domestic violence, human trafficking and sexual assault in Greater Phoenix.

Since Season for Sharing began, more than $70 million has been raised for nonprofits in Maricopa County and around the state.
