GJPD bringing awareness to purse thefts

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — The Grand Junction Police Department is spreading awareness of increased purse theft in the Grand Valley.

The GJPD recently received more purse and wallet theft reports in Grand Junction. According to police, these thefts typically involve thieves quickly snatching purses or bags from unsuspecting victims and fleeing the scene before the victim realizes what happened. These thieves often use distraction techniques while working in groups to steal purses and wallets.

Here are some tips the GJPD says could help prevent you from being a victim:

  • Stay Aware: Always be aware of your surroundings and pay attention to those around you.

  • Secure Your Purse and Wallet: Carry your purse and/or wallet close to your body and keep it zipped or closed at all times. Consider using a crossbody strap-type bag, as it can be more difficult for thieves to grab.

  • Use Wallets Wisely: Keep your wallet in a secured compartment within your purse. Avoid displaying large amounts of cash or valuable items.

  • Don’t Give Thieves the Opportunity: Never leave your purse or wallet in an unattended shopping cart or vehicle. Thieves look for crimes of opportunity, so keep your personal belongings with you.

If you have been a victim of theft, file an online police report or call the GJPD at 970-549-5000.
