GLAAD Approves of 'Stranger Things' Character Coming Out: 'Another Step Forward for LGBTQ Storytelling'

It may take place in the 80s but Netflix's hit show "Stranger Things" is pushing boundaries today and GLAAD has given their stamp of approval.

If you haven't watched Season 3 yet of the show, warning there are spoilers below.

If you have watched this season of the show you know how much ground it covers. It takes viewers on a journey from shopping malls to underground Russian laboratories, Mind Flayer to "The Thing"-like creatures and mind-blowing special effects that make Season 1 pale in comparison.

But the Duffer Brothers have included as much heart in this season as action. Among the heartstrings pulled this season you have Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) and Mike's (Finn Wolfhard) blossoming romance, Hopper (David Harbour) and Joyce's (Winona Ryder) bickering love-fest, multiple characters finding themselves, and one major character coming out.

After narrowly escaping the hands of an underground Russian lab, two seemingly star-crossed lovers Robin (Maya Hawke) and Steve "The Hair" Harrington (Joe Keery) confide in each other. Robin, the funny-wise-cracking Scoops Ahoy employee, comes out to Steve in a surprising and beautiful way. "It isn't because I had a crush on you," Robin tells Steve during an emotional scene. "It's because she wouldn't stop staring at you." The "she" that Robin is referring to is a girl she had a crush on in Steve's class.

Director of Entertainment Media Jeremy Blacklow tells The Blast, “GLAAD is thrilled to see Netflix continuing to be a home for great LGBTQ characters. Maya’s character of Robin on 'Stranger Things' is yet another step forward for LGBTQ storytelling in the teen drama genre. And the fact that show is so widely watched around the world by such diverse audiences means that its impact is all the more significant.”

We couldn't agree more.
