Glacier speech and debate sets record at Gonzaga tourney

Jan. 10—Glacier High School speech and debate brought home the Conway Classic title with its record-breaking performance at Gonzaga University over the weekend.

Glacier dominated the competition, amassing 360 overall points, a tournament record. The new record breaks the one Glacier set in 2012, head coach Greg Adkins noted. The team racked up the points by winning 11 out of 15 individual events.

"This was a great weekend for our team as we gear up for the final weeks before our state tournament at the end of the month," Adkins said.

Twenty-five teams from 11 states competed with only six other teams scoring points. Glacier was the only Montana team to compete. Second place went to Texas team St. Mark's with 65 points. The Washington team from Interlake High School placed third with 55 points.

"The tournament was dramatically smaller than it has been in the past, and you can really see the effects that the Covid-19 pandemic has had on this region," Adkins said. "The teams were very small in total numbers, and some were competing in person for the first time since the winter of 2020."

"We were thankful for the opportunity to compete, and hope that we helped re-establish the tournament as one of the best in the region," he added, noting that students were able to try new events and the tournament format is different from Montana's in that it allowed them to watch teammates compete.
