A 34-year-old Glassboro man was killed when his car collided with the back of a garbage truck in the Sicklerville section of Gloucester Township on Tuesday evening.

At around 6:15 p.m., Gloucester Township police officers responded to the 900 block of Johnson Road after reports of a serious crash with a vehicle possibly on fire and person trapped inside, the department said Friday.

A 2005 Chevrolet Malibu had struck the back of a garbage truck, and the driver was pinned inside. Firefighters with Lambs Terrace Fire Department worked to get the person, who was seriously injured, out of the Malibu. EMTs with Inspira and Virtua paramedics worked to stabilize the driver, who was taken to Jefferson Health Washington Township with life-threatening injuries.

The roadway was closed for about three hours while investigators were on the scene. A preliminary investigation found that the trash truck had two employees at the back of it loading waste into it, while the driver was in the cab of the truck. One of the employees saw the Chevrolet heading toward them, with no indication it would stop. That employee pushed the other employee out of the way moments before impact.

Neither employee was injured, nor was the driver of the truck.
