Petoskey District Library and the Harbor Springs Festival of the Book invite the public to join them for library's National Endowment for the Arts Big Read book discussion of "An American Sunrise" by Joy Harjo at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 10 at the Harbor Springs Festival of the Book office at 160 State Street Harbor Springs. Local writer Glen Young will facilitate.

The NEA Big Read broadens our understanding of our world, our communities, and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book.

Glen Young is a retired English teacher living in northern Michigan. His "Literate Matters" column — first introduced in 2000 — appears regularly in the Petoskey News Review. He is the editor of Beneath the Lilac Canopy, and his poetry and journalism appear regularly in a wide range of publications. He is also co-director of the Top of the Mitt Writing Project, director of the Little Traverse Literary Guild, as well as the Vice Chair of the Harbor Springs Festival of the Book.

This event is in partnership with Harbor Springs Festival of the Book. It's mission is to inspire readers of all ages and to celebrate the culture of books in a beautiful part of the world. Each fall, Harbor Springs is transformed into a celebration of books during the Harbor Springs Festival of the Book’s premier three-day event. The festival and a variety of literary events throughout the year inspire readers of all ages.

The NEA Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest. For more information about the NEA Big Read, including book and author information, podcasts, and videos, visit www.arts.gov/neabigread.

The library’s book club, Page Turners, invite the public to come and discuss Firekeeper’s Daughter by Angeline Boulley, followed by sharing of Harjo’s poetry. Light refreshments will be provided.

The series will culminate in a poetry and music open mic night at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 26 at the Crooked Tree Arts Center. For more information on all upcoming NEA events visit www.petoskeylibrary.org/using-the-library/community-reads/.
