Glenn Highway closed for hours near Sutton after fuel tanker rollover and spill

Sep. 28—The Glenn Highway was closed in both directions for several hours Thursday between Sutton and Chickaloon after a Crowley fuel tanker crashed and leaked a small amount of oil and diesel from the engine, authorities said.

The tanker was northbound around 6:45 a.m. when it rolled near Mile 67, between Sutton and Chickaloon, Alaska State Troopers spokesman Austin McDaniel said. No one was injured and the tanker was the only vehicle involved, he said.

The highway reopened around 5:40 p.m. Thursday, according to an update from Alaska511.

Troopers are investigating the crash, McDaniel said.

Crews from the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation were on scene Thursday because a small amount of oil and gas leaked from the Crowley truck's engine, said Anna Carey, the department's central region manager. The truck was hauling two trailers of gasoline, she said. A small amount of gasoline leaked from the caps on the top of the trailers, but the tanks were not breached during the crash, Carey said.

There was no threat to nearby waters from the spilled material, Carey said.

Absorbent material and a boom was deployed out of an abundance of caution and a small drip leak was contained, according to Torey Vogel, a spokeswoman for Crowley.
