After 18 years at Timken and McKinley, Rick Hairston spent three seasons away from coaching before he was hired as GlenOak's boys basketball head coach in May.

Rick Hairston had a successful return to the sideline on Friday.

Ja'Corey Lipkins scored 18 points to lead the GlenOak boys basketball team past Padua 64-53 in Hairston’s first game as Golden Eagles head coach.

Hairston spent three years away from coaching before he was hired at GlenOak in May. He went 264-148 in 18 years as the head coach at Timken and McKinley.

Jaylen McElroy finished with 13 points for the Golden Eagles.

Other boys basketball

LOUISVILLE 71, PERRY 48 Will Aljancic hit four 3-pointers and scored 20 points to lead the Leopards to a season-opening win at home. Tyler Boldon added 16 points and Hayden Nigro 14 for Louisville. Joel Brown led Perry with 19 points.

LAKOTA EAST 80, JACKSON 54 Kevin James scored 17 points for the Polar Bears in a season-opening loss at the Ohio Valey Hoops Classic in Mason. Lakota East outscored Jackson 26-4 in the third quarter to take command. Mack Kistler finished with 10 points for the Polar Bears. Jadon Coles led Lakota East with 17 points.

MALVERN 58, SMITHVILLE 37 Michael Minor scored 14 points to lead the Hornets to a win in their opener. Malvern took control in the second half by outscoring Smithville 32-20. Noah Ball scored 12 points and J’Allen Barrino and K.J. Thomas added 11 apiece for the Hornets. Bryson White grabbed seven rebounds.

TUSKY VALLEY 78, KINGSWAY CHRISTIAN 12 The Trojans built a 51-12 halftime lead and shut out Kingsway Christian in the second half. Connar Newsome led Tusky Valley with 19 points. Logan Stotzer finished with 13 points. Cody Robinson and Silas Miller added 12 apiece.

Girls basketball

HOOVER 53, KENMORE-GARFIELD 22 Angela Roshak and Janet Eriksen scored 14 points apiece as the Vikings cruised past Kenmore-Garfield. Hoover jumped out to a 20-8 lead after one quarter and was never threatened. Grace Craig added 12 points for the Vikings.

MARLINGTON 54, CANFIELD 39 Maria Warner and Chelsea Evanich scored 17 points apiece to lead Marlington past Canfield. Evanich scored 13 points in the second half for the Dukes, who rallied from a 25-20 halftime deficit. She also grabbed 11 rebounds.

NORWAYNE 54, TUSKY VALLEY 40 Brook Stookey scored 16 points and Ashley Merrick had 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Trojans in their loss at the College of Wooster Tip-Off Classic.

Women’s basketball

WALSH 73, BLACK HILLS STATE 51 Morgan McMillen scored 19 points as the Cavaliers completed a successful trip to the Malika Sports Tours Oahu Thanksgiving Classic in Hawaii. Walsh opened the trip with an 87-32 win over Chaminade and finished the sweep 24 hours later. The Cavs (4-1) led 41-30 at halftime and took command in the third quarter when they outscored Black Hills State 16-6. Megan Ball scored 17 points and Sha Carter finished with 10 points and seven rebounds for Walsh. Alyssa Dean added five assists.
