PHILADELPHIA — GlenOak's Tommy Rice came so close to his biggest win Sunday morning.

Rice finished second in the boys mile rising stars race at the New Balance Nationals Outdoor Track and Field Championships. His time of 4:15.55 broke the GlenOak mile record of 4:15.78 set by Derrick Iannamorelli in 2001.

Walsh Jesuit's Luke Ondracek edged Rice for the title in the final heat. He finished in 4:14.79.

Ondracek and Rice competed together in the 2-mile twice during the postseason. Rice won his first Division I state title and Ondracek finished 10th at the OHSAA Track and Field Championships. Ondracek won the regional title and Rice was runner-up the previous week.

Ondracek is heading to Georgetown University this fall. Rice, who finished 18th in the 2-mile at New Balance Nationals, has one more year remaining at GlenOak.

Minerva's Connor Shingleton came in 23rd and East Canton's Gabe Shilling finished 64th in Sunday's boys mile rising stars race.

Shingleton will continue his career at Youngstown State. Shilling is heading to Malone.
